وَعَويصُ مِنَ الأُمورِ بَهيم

وَعَويصُ مِنَ الأُمورِ بَهيم

غامِضِ الشَخصَ مُظلِم مَستور

غامِضِ الشَخصَ مُظلِم مَستور

And a knotty matter, among all matters pitch-dark,

And a knotty matter, pitch-dark,

of obscure aspect, dark and veiled—

Indistinct in form, dark and veiled,

قَد تَسَهَّلتَ ما تَوَعَّرَ مِنهُ

قَد تَسَهَّلتَ ما تَوَعَّرَ مِنهُ

بِلِسانٍ يَزينَهُ التَحبير

بِلِسانٍ يَزينَهُ التَحبير

you have readily mastered whatever in it proved hard,

You have found easy what was rugged in it,

with a tongue adorned by eloquent artistry,

With a tongue adorned by eloquent embellishment.

مِثلُ وَشيِ البُرودِ هَلهَلَه النَس

مِثلُ وَشيِ البُرودِ هَلهَلَه النَس

جُ وَعِندَ الحِجاجِ دَرُ نَثير

جُ وَعِندَ الحِجاجِ دَرُ نَثير

like the brocade of robes, made delicate by the weav—

Like the embroidery of cloaks, made sheer by the

—ing; and in disputation, pearls scattered wide.

Weaving; and in argument, scattered pearls.

حُسنُ الصَمتِ وَالمَقاطِع أَما

حُسنُ الصَمتِ وَالمَقاطِع أَما

نَطقُ القَومِ وَالحَديثِ يَدور

نَطقُ القَومِ وَالحَديثِ يَدور

Beautiful are silence and measured pauses while

The beauty of silence and pauses; as for

the company speaks and conversation circles round;

The people's speech, conversation goes round.

ثُمَّ مِن بَعدِ لَحظَة تَوَرَّثَ اليُس

ثُمَّ مِن بَعدِ لَحظَة تَوَرَّثَ اليُس

رُ وَعرض مُهذب مَوفور

رُ وَعرض مُهذب مَوفور

then, after a moment, eas—

Then, after a moment, he inherited

—e and a refined, abundant honor come to possess him.

Ease and honor, refined and undiminished.
