يا نورَةِ الهَجرِ حَلَّقَت الصَفا
لِماbecause بَدَتappeared ليto me ليفَةُloofah الصَدrejection
لِما بَدَت لي ليفَةُ الصَد
O depilatory lime of estrangement, you have shaved away harmony,
O light of estrangement, the rocks of Al-Safa flew
because the loofah of rejection appeared to me.

ياO مِئزَرُloincloth الأَسقامِailments حَتّىuntil مَتىwhen
يا مِئزَرُ الأَسقامِ حَتّى مَتى
تَنقَعُyou soak فيin حَوضٍa basin مِنَof الجُهدِtoil
تَنقَعُ في حَوضٍ مِنَ الجُهدِ
O loincloth of ailments, how long
O belt of the sick, how long will you
will you soak in a basin of toil?
Soak in a basin of effort?
أَوقَدlight أَتونَfurnace الوَصلِreunion ليfor me مَرَّةًonce
أَوقَد أَتونَ الوَصلِ لي مَرَّةً
مِنكَfrom you بِزَنبيلٍwith a basket مِنَof الوُدaffection
مِنكَ بِزَنبيلٍ مِنَ الوُد
Light the furnace of reunion for me once,
She kindled the fire of reunion for me once
with a basket of affection from you.
With a pot of affection
فَالبَينُfor parting مُذsince أَوقَدَset alight حَمامَةa dove
فَالبَينُ مُذ أَوقَدَ حَمامَة
قَدindeed هاجَstirred قَلبيmy heart مَسلَخundressing room الوَجدlonging
قَد هاجَ قَلبي مَسلَخ الوَجد
For since parting set a dove alight,
So since the estranged one lit the flame
the undressing room of longing has indeed stirred my heart.

أَفسَدَspoiled خَطميmallow الصَفاharmony وَالهَوىand love
أَفسَدَ خَطمي الصَفا وَالهَوى
نَخالَةbran الناقِضِthe breaker لِلعَهدِof the covenant
نَخالَة الناقِضِ لِلعَهدِ
The mallow of harmony and love was spoiled
