وَكانواand they were لَناto us أَصدِقاءَfriends مَضواthey passed away
وَكانوا لَنا أَصدِقاءَ مَضوا
تَفانواthey perished جَميعاًall فَماso not خَلَّدواthey lived forever
تَفانوا جَميعاً فَما خَلَّدوا
They were friends of ours, and they passed away.
And they were friends of ours who passed away.
They perished, every one; none lived forever.
They all perished; none lived forever.
تَساقَواthey gave one another drink جَميعاًall كُؤوسَcups of المَنونdeath
تَساقَوا جَميعاً كُؤوسَ المَنون
فَماتَso died الصَديقُthe friend وَماتَand died العَدُّوthe enemy
فَماتَ الصَديقُ وَماتَ العَدُّو
Together they drank from the cups of Death—
Together they shared the cups of Death.
So friend and foe alike were dead.
So the friend died, and the enemy died.
