صرمت سفاهتي وأرحت حلمي
I cast off my foolishness and set free my forbearance
تطاولت للضحاك حتى رددته
I reached out to fortune though it eluded me,
يا صخر لا تسلمن يوما فتفضحنا
O rock do not ever humiliate us
أغر رجالا من قريش تتابعوا
Men of Quraysh have led astray a man
ما أحسن العدل والإنصاف من عمل
How beautiful is justice and fairness in deed
شجاع إذا ما أمكنتني فرصة
Brave when afforded an opportunity,
سأكفيك ما عندي فقل لابن عامر
I will suffice you with what I have, so say to Ibn Aamir
لمال المرء يصلحه فيغني
Why should man amass that which betters him
يا حسين بن علي ليس ما
O Hussein son of Ali, nothing
يموت الصالحون وأنت حي
The righteous die while you live on
أالآن لما ألقت الحرب بركها
Now, when war has cast its die
أصخر بن حرب لا نعدك سيدا
Aṣaḫru bin Ḥarb, we do not count you as master,
إذا راح في قوهية متلبسا
If he walks away arrogantly dressed
إذا قال لم يترك مقالا ولم يقف
If he spoke, he left no saying, nor did he stop
نفى النوم ما لا تبتغيه الأضالع
Sleep dispelled what the ribs do not seek
ألا قل لأسماء المنى أم مالك
Say to Asma, o mother of Malik
تدارك ما ضيعت من بعد خبرة
Try to make up for what you have wasted after gaining experience
وإن سفاه الشيخ لا حلم بعده
The foolishness of an old man leaves no wisdom after,
ليس بيني وبين قيس عتاب
No strife between Qays and I,
إذا لم أعد بالحلم مني عليكم
If I no longer show restraint toward you all,
فإن أك في شراركم قليلا
Though I'm but little among the worst of you
كتاركة بيضها بالعراء
One who left her eggs in the wilderness
أواضع رجل فوق أخرى يعدنا
Feet stepping one over the other count us
أرى العفو عن عليا قريش وسيلة
I see forgiving Aliya of Quraish as a means
طلب الأبلق العقوق فلما
The spotted one asked the disobedient one, but when
لعمري لقد أنصفت والنصف عادتي
I have been just, as justice is my way,
ألا يا عمرو عمرو قبيل سهم
Alas, O Amr, before the arrow strikes,
أكان الجبان يرى أنه
Does the coward think that fleeing
ومستعجب مما يرى من أناتنا
Amazed at what he sees of our softness
أبقى الحوادث من خلي
The vicissitudes of fate are lasting
يا عمرو إنك قد قشرت لي العصا
O Amro, you have indeed stripped my stick
وقتك وأسباب المنايا كثيرة
Your time and the causes of death are many
فلا تعجلا واستغفروا الله إنه
So do not rush and seek forgiveness from Allah, for
ألا قل لعبد الله واخصص محمدا
Say to Abdullah and single out Muhammad
أدم إدامة حصن أو خذن بيدي
Either persist in besieging a fortress or take my hand
ألا لله من هفوات عمرو
Alas for the lost years of my life
أما والذي نادى من الطور عبده
He who called his servant from Mount Sinai
حريث ألم تعلم وجهلك ضائر
Hurrayth, do you not know, your ignorance is harmful,
لعمري لقد عمرت في الدهر برهة
By my life, I have lived long in this world,
تقول قريش حين خفت حلومها
Quraysh say when their power waned,
رب ساع لقاعد
ليس من قد غذاه طفلا صغيرا
إذا سار من دون امرىء وأمامه
ألا يا سعد قد أظهرت شكا
لقد جمعت لكم من جمع ذي حسب
إن تناقش يكن نقاشك يا ربب
إنما موضع سر المرء إن
إذا قلت قد ولت ربيعة أقبلت
أبلغ لديك أبا أيوب مألكة
لله در زياد أيما رجل
إذا أنا أعطيت القليل شكوتم
تطاول ليلي واعترتني وساوسي
قد عشت في الدهر ألوانا على خلق
أتاني أمر فيه للناس غمة
دعوت ابن عباس إلى حد خطة
