1. Why should man amass that which betters him
When less suffices the self-content?
١. لمالُ المرْءِ يُصْلِحُهُ فَيُغْني
مَفَاقِرَهُ أَعَفُّ مَنَ القُنُوعِ
2. With it he wards off the blows of fate -
Like a river in full flow unspent.
٢. يَسُدُّ به نوائبَ تَعْتَرِيهِ
مِنَ الأيّامِ كالنَّهْرِ الشّروعِ
