وأسعدتها أكف غير مقرفة

And her happiness was brought by hands unsoiled,

فليت زيادا لا يزلن بناته

Oh daughters of Ziyad do not cease to die

تريك القذى من دونها وهي دونه

The fleck shows you not itself but what's beyond

يا أيها السائل عما مضى

O seeker of what is past

في فتية جعلوا الصليب إلههم

In youths who have made the cross their god

فإن أبا معرض إذ حسا

For Abu Mu'arridh when he tasted

تقول يا شيخ أما تستحي

You say, "O sheikh, are you not ashamed

أبلغ أبا مروان أن عطاءه

Tell Abu Marwan that his gift

فلا أسدا أسب ولا تميما

I bear neither lion nor Tameem any malice

ومسوف نشد الصبوح صبحته

One who procrastinates called out to the morning at its dawn

رب ندمان كريم ماجد

Many a noble, glorious, generous man

أقول والكأس في كفي أقلبها

I speak, and the cup is in my hand, I turn it around

وسألتني يوم الرحيل قصائدا

And you asked me on the day of departure for poems

حضرموت فتشت أحسابنا

Hazramaut has ransacked our clans

تميم بن مر كفكفوا عن تعمدي

Tamim ibn Murr, cease your mocking of me,

ومن لي بأن أسطيع أن أذكر اسمه

Who will enable me to remember his name?

يريد النساء ويأبى الرجال

Men want women yet men deny

إذا صليت خمسا كل يوم

If I pray five times each day

قرب الله بالسلام وحيا

May Allah bring peace and greet

ألا إنما الإنسان غمد لقلبه

O heart! The body's but a blade's abiding sheath,

لم يغرر بذات خف سوانا

He was not deceived by the charm of a soft-footed beauty

سألت ربيعة من شرها

I asked the tribe of Rabee'ah, who among them was the worst,

غلب الصبر فاعترتني هموم

Patience has prevailed, so sorrows have befallen me

جريت مع الصبا طلق العتيق

I roamed with the morning breeze, free and unconfined,

يسائلني هشام عن صلاتي

أيا صاحبي أبشر بزورتنا الحمى

My friend, rejoice at our visit to the tribe,

ألا أبلغ لديك أبا هشام

Shall I not send word, O father of Hisham,

يا بغل بغل أبي مضاء تعلمن

O mule, my father's white mule, you have learned

عدمت أبا الذيال من ذي نوالة

I blamed Abu Dhiyāl, a frequenter of brothels,

إن كانت الخمر قد عزت وقد منعت

If wine is now forbidden and denied

ألا يا دوم دام لك النعيم

O Dome, may you enjoy prosperity forever!

إني أتاني مقال كنت آمنه

A tale has reached me, I once thought it pure,

أبني تميم ما لمنبر ملككم

O sons of Tamim, why does not the seat of your kingdom

غضبت دودان من مسجدنا

The ants were angered by our mosque

خرجت من المصر الحواري أهله

I left Egypt, whose people had no lamentations,

وفد الوفود فكنت أول وافد

كفاني المجوسي مهر الرباب
