لقد لطمت كف الفتاة هجينها

The maiden's palm struck her beloved's cheek,

تؤرقني وقد أمست بعيداً

Far away you are, yet still you keep me awake

أنا السمع الأزل فلا أبالي

I am eternal hearing, so I do not care

ألا طرقت رحلي وقد نام صحبتي

My friend, I knocked while my companions slept

إذا أصبحت بين جبال قوو

When I come between mountains of strength

إن بالشعب الذي دون سلع

For a people who have no goods to sell

ألا ليت شعري والتلهف ضلة

Alas! Would that I knew, though bewilderment is an aberration

دعيني وقولي بعد ما شئت إنني

Leave me be and say what you will after,

إذا أوحش الليل الهدان وجدتني

When the night deserts its abode and finds me lonely,

زنوا الصخر أني يمكن الصخر يودن

Consider the rock: though the rock may be lowered,

إذا هم لم يحذر من الليل غمة

When his purpose was fixed, he feared not the darkness of night,

وأنا امرؤ إن يأخذوني عنوةً

And I am a man, if they take me by force

أقيموا بني أمي صدور مطيكم

Set out, my desert friends, your camel litters,

قتيلا فخار أنتما إن قتلتما

Slain on perfumed embers, if slain you be,

يا صاحبي هل الحذار مسلمي

My friend, is fate inescapable for me

ومستبسل ضافي القميص ضممته

A youth in loose shirt I embraced

ومرقبة عنقاء يقصر دونها

With a slender graceful neck that humbles

ليس لوالدة هوءها

A mother's care cannot protect her son,

ومن يك مثلي يلقه الموت خالياً

He who is like me, death meets him empty

لا تبعدي إما ذهبت شامه

Do not go too far wherever you went, my love

ولا تقبروني إن دفني محرم

Do not bury me, for that is forbidden to you,

فقال غراب لا اغتراب من النوى

ولا عيب في اليحموم غير هزاله

ألا هل أتى عنا سعاد ودونها

وكف فتى لم يعرف السلخ قبلها

ألا أم عمرو أجمعت فاستقلت

ونائحة أوحيت في الصبح سمعها
