أعنبس قد كنت لا فقر بي
Alas! Once I had no want of thee,
وعدت فلما أن أردت نجاحه
You promised, but when I wanted its success
ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب
O convey to Mu'awiya ibn Harb
ضرب التجيبي المضلل ضربة
The misguided Al-Tajeebee struck a blow
ألا ترون العبد إذ يهجو مضر
My friend, a wise heart turns enemies into friends. Let us move forward with empathy and understanding.
وإن مال الضجيع بها فدعص
Over the dunes, a stallion gallops
آب ليلى بهموم وفكر
My love Laila is worried and pensive
لا خير في الود ممن لا تزال له
No good is the affection of one who still
أشهد كل مسلم شهادة
I bear witness for every Muslim a testimony
وإني من قوم كرام يزيدهم
Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.
ترى المرء مخلوقا وللعينِ حظا
Man seems created for the eye to see
يا سلم جارتنا بالغمر حييت
O neighbor's ladder drenched with clouds, I greeted
كأن راكبها غصن بمروحة
As if its rider were a branch with a fan
ذممت ولم تحمد وأدركت حاجتي
I was blamed though not praised, and got what I wanted.
أعفاء تحسبهم للحياء
The tolerant you take for cowards
أيها الشاتمي لتجيب مثلي
O you who revile me, answer my poem in kind
وإن بني حرب كما قد علمتم
The sons of Harb, as you all know
دع ذا وعد قريض شعرك في امرئ
Leave this one be and turn your poetry to one
مولاك لا يظلم لديك فإنما
Your Master does no wrong toward you. Rather
إذا الله لم يسقِ إلا الكرام
If God does not give water except to the generous,
هن أسلاب عين أباغ
Those captives with downcast eyes
كأن أبي لكم في الكفر نكلا
My father was blamed by you for his disbelief
ألا يا مستنيص العيس كدا
Alas, O coveter of livelihood so ardently
ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب
O should I tell Mu'awiyah ibn Harb,
صار العزيز ذليلا والذليل له
The mighty became lowly and the lowly one
أرى الاقبال منك على خليلي
I see you eagerly speaking with my beloved
الله يعلم أني كنت مشتغلا
God knows I was busy
إن الفتى لفتى المكارم والعلى
The youth is truly of nobility and loftiness
أميزانان من شؤم ولؤم
Two scales, one of ill omens and evil
وإن امرأ نال الغنى ثم لم ينل
And if a man attained wealth, then did not attain
ألا أبلغ معاوية بن صخر
O messenger, convey my words
إن الخليل الذي تنضو مودته
The friend whose affection blossoms
ما زال ينمي جده صاعدا
His perseverance still grows, ascending
يا مبتلى بالحب مفدوحا
O one afflicted with love praised,
كأن فؤادي في مخالب طائر
My heart is as though in the claws of a bird
رمل هل تذكرين يوم غزال
The sands, do you remember the day of the gazelle
سائلا مية هل نبهتها
Asking water in the dead of night
وأبلياني اليوم صبرا منكما
Today you give me patience from you both
فقلت انجوا عنها نجا الجلد انه
So I said avoid her, may you escape unscathed
في قباب حول دسكرة
In domes around Daskara,
ألم تر أن القوم أمس تشرفوا
Did you not see the people yesterday exalted
إن شرخ الشباب والشعر الأسود
The madness of youth and morning’s fresh dreams
لا تنكحي إن فرق الدهر بيننا
Marry not, though fate our lives may sever
من درة غالي بها ملك
From a precious pearl that has a kingdom
صاح حيا الإله حيا ودورا
The God awoke, long live the God, revolving are the ages,
نحاكم الله يوم القسم وحدكم
May God judge you on the day of division alone,
إني لأعلم أن عجزا ظاهرا
I know well that obvious weakness
يا أم بشر ثقي باللّه واعترفي
O mother, have faith in God and confess
ورب امرئ تعتده لك ناصحا
Many a man you deem your counselor
ألم تر أني لا ألين لناعم
Don't you see that I yield not to one who's gentle,
من كان يأكل من فريسة صيده
He who used to eat from the prey of his hunt
تطاول ليلي من هموم فبعضها
My night grew long with concerns, some old
متى ما يرى الناس الغني وجاره
When people see a wealthy man beside his poor neighbor,
ليت شعري أغائب ليس بالشام
My friend, are you absent or present, Oh Na'aman?
ألا من رسول أصلح اللهباله
Oh messenger, may God reform your mind,
وإن سعيد الجد من بات ليلة
If you wake up from a night without committing grave sins
وكنت إذا ما رأيت الصديق
Whenever I saw a friend
أتاني عنك يا مسكين قول
فإن قلت فاعلم ما تقول فإنه
يا هند يا أخت النجاشي أسلمي
إني رأيت من المكارم حسبكم
وأما قولك الخلفاء منا
أرقت لبرق مستطيرٍ كأنه
ولو كنت خوار القناة مؤاكلا
بأجرد مثل قضيب الأشا
كذبتم بل أنتم أهل حرة
ألا ياليل ويحك نبئينا
من يفعل الحسنات الله يشكرها
أبلغ بني الأشترِ إن جئتهم
إذا المرء اعيته المروءة ناشئا
وإن مال الضجيع بها فدعص
قل للذي كاد لولا خط لحيته
