- أبلغ أبا حصن وبعضTell Abu Hisn—and some

- أسرت مخلدا فعفوت عنهI took Mukhallad captive, then pardoned him.
- أقيس إن هلكت وأنت حيO Qays, if I die while you are alive,
- ألا من مبلغ حسان عنيAh, who will carry a message from me to Hassan?
- أيا راكبا إما عرضت فبلغنO rider, if you happen that way, be sure to convey
- بنى متى هلكت وأنت حيMy son, whenever you perish while still alive,
- ثم ارعويت وقد طال الوقوف بناThen I came to my senses, after our lingering had grown long,
- رجموا بالغيب كيما يعلمواThey guessed at the unseen, so they might learn
- رقود الضحى صفر الحشى منتهى المنىShe sleeps through the forenoon, slender-waisted, all one could wish for.
- سبحوا الله شرق كل صباحGlorify God at every morning's dawn,
- على أن قد فجعت بذي حفاظThough I have indeed been bereaved of a man of steadfast honor,
- غراس كالفتائن مغرضاتPlanted trees, like great ships, girdled,
- فلست لحاصن إن لم تروناThen I am no son of a chaste woman if you do not see us
- فمن ورث الغنى فليصطنعهHe who inherits wealth, let him use it properly
- قالت ولم تقصد لقيل الخناShe said, with no intent to utter foul words:
- لأكناف الجريب فنعف سلمىSurely the outskirts of al-Jurayb, then the spur of Salma,
- لقد رأيت بني عمرو فما وهنواI have indeed seen the sons of ‘Amr, and they did not falter
- من يصل نارى بلا ذنب ولا ترةWhoever burns in my fire without offense or grievance
- نحن بما عندنا وأنت بماWe are content with what we have, and you with what
- وأحرزنا المغانم واسقبحناWe secured the spoils and overran
- وقد لاح في الصبح الثريا كما ترىAnd the Pleiades appeared at dawn, as you see,
- وكان أبو أحيحة قد علمتمAnd Abu Uhayha was, as you already know,
- ومن صنعه يوم فيل الحبوشAnd among His deeds was the day of the Abyssinians' elephant,
- يقول أبو قيس وأصبح غادياAbu Qays says, as he sets out in the morning:
