Surely the outskirts of al-Jurayb, then the spur of Salma,
The flanks of the nearby hill are covered in flowers,
then the waterholes of al-Asahil, then al-Janab,
And the coasts of Ahsa, then Janaab,
إلىas far as روضاتthe meadows of ليلىLayla مخصباتٍfertile
عوافٍlushly grown قدalready أصاتbuzzed بهاamong them الذبابthe flies
as far as Layla’s fertile meadows,
To the fertile gardens of Layla,
lush with growth, where the flies have buzzed—
With humming insects that swarm and hover,
كأنَّas though المكرthe makr plants والحوذانَand the buttercups فيهاin them
وحماضand the sorrel of التلاعِthe gullies الكهلَmature غابthickets
as though the makr plants and buttercups there
As if mischief and deceit were there,
and the mature sorrel of the gullies were thickets—
And the foolishness of old age has vanished.

are worthier of your young men than war against a people
Is it right that your youths make war
with many men, a territory, and persistence.
Against a people with dignity, region, and constitution?

And if they repent, the tribe of Suleim

To gather water supplies and bring them forth,
And at al-Hawlan are Kalb and al-Rabab,
With camels, dogs, and carriages.

Over Ta'us I saw the tents.
