I saw the sons of Amr, they did not falter

at the clash, nor did they think of retreat.

At the encounter, nor thought of lying.

ألا فدى لهم أمي وما ولدت

Ah, may my mother and all she bore be a ransom for them,

By my mother's life! Those who walk

on the morning they strode with the swift trot of untamed camels,

Tomorrow morning with dragging spear-heads,

بكل سلهبةٍ كالأيمِ ماضية

بكل سلهبةٍ كالأيمِ ماضية

وكل أبيضَ ماضي الحدِّ مخشوب

وكل أبيضَ ماضي الحدِّ مخشوب

with every long spear, serpent-like and piercing,

With every long-necked one, speeding like an ostrich,

and every bright sword, keen-edged and whetted.

And every white one sharpened at the point,
