O rider, if you happen that way, be sure to convey

a far-traveling message from me to Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib:

the message of a man alarmed by the relations among you,

grieved by this despite the distance, and weary.

And worries had already made their dwelling with me,

yet I had not fulfilled my needs and aims concerning them.

I was told you were two factions, each tribe

raising its own clamor, between batterers and gatherers of firewood.

I seek God's protection for you from the evil of your deeds,

and the evil of your mutual aggression and the covert planting of scorpions,

and the display of dispositions and sickly secret counsels,

like awl-pricks whose blows are truly [unerring].

So remind them of God at the very first moment,

and of profaning the sacred protection of the lean gazelles.

And tell them—God pronounces His judgment—

leave war alone, and let it leave you for the wide expanses.

    هي الغُول للأقصين أو للأقارب

    Whenever you rouse it, you rouse a hateful thing;

it is the ghoul for distant folk or close relations.

It severs kinship ties and destroys a people,

and pares the fat from hump and withers.

And in place of Athamiyyah cloth you take

    an under-armor tunic and rusty armor, the warrior's clothes;

and in place of musk and camphor, dust-gray, ample coats of mail,

as though their rivets were locusts' eyes.

So beware of war; let it never ensnare you,

and of a pool with noxious water and bitter draughts.

It makes itself alluring to peoples; then they see it

in its aftermath, when a companion's mother makes it plain.

It burns, sparing no weak man, and targets

the mighty among you with deaths that strike true.

Do you not know what happened in the war of Dahis,

that you might take warning—or what happened in the war of Hatib?

How many a noble, acknowledged chief has it struck down,

tall of tent-pole, whose guest is never disappointed,

with abundant hearth-ash, his conduct praised,

and a man of character, pure and noble in lineage.

And water spilled in folly, as though

the east wind and the south winds had scattered it.

A man truly knowledgeable tells you of it,

of its days; and [knowledge] is the knowledge of experience.

So sell the spears [to the warrior], and remember

your reckoning; God is the best reckoner.

And [for] a man who has chosen a faith, let there be

no watcher over you but the Lord of the piercing stars.

Establish for us an upright faith, for you are

our standard; lofty crests can show the way.

    تؤمون والأحلام غير عوازب

    And you are a light and a safeguard for these people;

you are sought out, and sound judgment does not desert you.

And when people are sifted, you are the jewel.

Yours is the navel of al-Batha', you of lofty noses.

    You safeguard noble, freeborn bodies,

with pure pedigrees, not of mixed stock.

You see seekers of their needs heading toward your houses,

bands of the perishing guided by other bands.

Peoples have surely known that your chiefs

in every circumstance are the best of the people of al-Jabajib,

their best in judgment and highest in conduct,

and most outspoken for truth amid the assembled companies.

So rise, pray to your Lord, and touch

the corners of this House between the Akhashib mountains.

For you have from Him an attested favor,

on the morning of Abu Yaksum, leader of the battalions:

his battalion lay at dusk on the plain, while his baggage

was on the jutting heights, at the heads of the mountain passes.

Then, when help from the Lord of the Throne reached you, they were driven back

by the Sovereign's troops, amid sweeping dust and pelting stones.

They turned away, swiftly fleeing, and none returned

home [from among the Abyssinians], save some bands.

For if you perish, we perish, and the seasonal gatherings perish,

through which people make their living—the word of a man who does not lie.
