- أخي والله خير من أخيكمMy brother, by God, is better than your brother,
- إذا أنت أقررت الظلامة لامرئIf you submit to a man's injustice,
- أذنب علينا ستم عروة خالهʿUrwa wronged us by reviling his maternal uncle—
- أسير الى بني بدر بأمرI journey to Banu Badr with a proposal;
- ألم يبلغك والأنماء تنميHas it not reached you, as reports spread,
- أما لك لا تأمن فزارة واخشهاO Malik, do not trust Fazara; beware of them.
- إن تك حرب فلم أجنهاIf there is war, I did not cause it;
- إن يوم الهباة أورثني الذلIndeed, the day of al-Habāh brought me humiliation,
- أينجو بنو بدر بمقتل مالكWill the sons of Badr go unpunished for Malik's killing,
- تعرفن من ذبيان من لو لقيتهYou know one of Dhubyan who, if I met him,
- تعلم أن خير الناس ميتKnow that the best of men is dead,
- جزاك الله خيرا من خليلMay God reward you well, as a friend
- جزاني الزهد مان جزاء سوءAl-Zahdamān repaid me with an evil recompense,
- شفيت النفس من حمل بن بدرI healed my soul by taking vengeance on Hamal ibn Badr,
- فإن تك حربكم أمست عواناThough you made war my protection before,
- فما أم أدراض بأرض مضلةSo no mother of young in a land where one loses one's way
- قل لمن يفهم عني ما أقولSay to whoever understands what I say:
- كم فارس يدعى وليس بفارسMany a man is called a horseman, yet is no horseman.
- لحا الله قوما أرشوا الحرب بينناMay God curse the people who kindled war between us.
- لعمرك ما أضاع بنو زيادBy your life, the sons of Ziyad have not neglected
- مالي أرى إبلي تحل كأنهاWhy do I see my camels settling, as though they were
- متى تتحزم بالمناطق ظالماWhenever you gird yourself with belts, acting unjustly,
- يود سنان لو نحارب قومناSinan wishes we would wage war on our own people,
