    جَنَتها خِيارُهُمُ أَو هُمُ

    If there is war, I did not cause it;

    Their best men caused it—or they themselves.

    Beware of death, since they have seen our horses:

    At their head is a black steed, swimming in its stride.

    Upon it rides an armored warrior, and his coat

    Is double-layered mail, its weave tightly wrought.

    And if war bares her shin to you,

    Then onward, Rabiʿ! And they did not tire.

    I warned Rabiʿ, but he was not deterred,

    As al-Harith the Crooked-Mouthed was deterred.
