فأصبحتso I became ظالماًa wrongdoer مظلوماone wronged
Indeed, the day of al-Habāh brought me humiliation,
The day I was defeated brought me disgrace
so I became both a wrongdoer and one wronged.
And I became an oppressor, oppressed
كانwas ظلميmy wrongdoing قتلkilling سارةِthe nobles (uncertain reading) بنيthe sons of بدرٍBadr
فأصبحتso I became بعدهمafter them مرحوماpitied
My wrongdoing was killing the nobles of the sons of Badr,
My oppression was killing Sarah, daughter of Badr's sons
and after them I became an object of pity.
And after them I was left bereaved
فخصبتso I stained (reading as فخضبت; supplied spelling means enriched) السنانَthe spearpoint منfrom ثُغرthroat-hollows القومِthe men
وكانواand they were للناظرينto those looking نجوماstars
So I stained the spearpoint with blood from the hollows of the men's throats,
So I made the lances fertile from the mouths of the people
and to those who looked, they were stars.
And to onlookers they were stars
كانwas ثأريmy vengeance لمالكfor Mālik بنson of زهيرٍZuhayr واحداًone man

My vengeance for Mālik ibn Zuhayr was against one man;
My only revenge was on Malik bin Zuheir
he was known among them.
Among them it was known

لقدindeed كُنتI was فيin الدماءِblood منهوماinsatiably ravenous
So I killed them all for fear of bereavement;
So I killed them all out of fear of losing a child
indeed, I was ravenous for blood.
I was certainly bloodthirsty

My wrongdoing and their wrongdoing yesterday
My oppression and their oppression yesterday
were grievous, and their judgment was tainted.
Was tremendous and their view blemished

The men slapped Dāḥis, fearing he would win;
The people slapped Dahis fearing his early arrival
Dāḥis was indeed ill-omened.
Dahis was certainly ill-fated

They wronged us through their killing, and we wronged
They wronged us by killing him and we wronged
a people whose day was foreordained.
A group whose day was destined

وأمنِand the safety of الطريدthe fugitive حظاًa share عظيماgreat
Indeed, al-Namir, in sheltering the neighbor
A neighbor surely has rights with the tiger
and keeping the fugitive safe, has great distinction.
And the fleeing prey immense safety
يأمنis safe الجارُthe neighbor فيهمamong them وترىand you see

The neighbor is safe among them, and you see
The neighbor is safe among them and you see
in their midst a man full-bellied and tall;
One with meekness and generality

he fills his bucket before a tribesman of al-Namir fills his,
He fills his bucket before his neighbor, the tiger’s bucket
and their neighbor's trough is not demolished.
And the basin of their neighbor is not demolished
