ماليwhy is it that I أَرىI see إِبِليmy camels تَحِلُّsettle كَأَنَّهاas though they were
نَوحٌwailing women تُجاوِبُanswer one another موهِناًlate at night أَعشاراin separate bands
Why do I see my camels settling, as though they were
Wailing women answering one another late at night in separate bands?
لَنwill not تَهبِطيyou descend أَبَداًever جَنوبَsouth of مُوَيسِلٍMuwaysil
وَقَناand Qanā قَراقِرَقَينِQarāqiraqayn فَالأَمراراthen al-Amrār
You shall never descend to the south of Muwaysil,
And Qanā, Qarāqiraqayn, then al-Amrār.
أَجهَلتُwas I ignorant مَنwho قَومٌa people هَرَقتُI shed دِماءُهُمtheir blood
بِيَديby my hand وَلَمand not أُدهَمI was taken unawares بِجَنبِbeside تِغاراTighār
Was I ignorant of who those people were whose blood I shed
With my own hand, without being taken unawares beside Tighār?
إِنَّindeed الهَوادَةَtruce لاno هَوادَةَtruce بَينَناbetween us
إِلّاexcept التَجاهُلَfeigned ignorance فَأَجهَدَنَّso I shall surely wear down فَزاراFazārah
As for truce, there is no truce between us,
Save feigned ignorance—so I shall surely wear down Fazārah—
إِلّاexcept التَزاوُرَvisiting one another فَوقَatop كُلِّevery مُقَلَّصٍlean, long-legged steed
يَهديleads الجِيادَthe fine steeds إِلىtoward الخَميسِthe army أَغاراcharged
Save visits to one another atop every lean, long-legged steed,
Leading the fine steeds toward the army in a charge.
فَلاهْبِطنَّthen I shall surely drive down الخَيلَthe horses حُرَّthe heart of بِلادِكُمyour lands

Then I shall surely drive the horses into the heart of your lands,
Lean-flanked, leaving their foals behind,
حَتّىuntil تَزورَthey visit بِلادَكُمyour lands وَتَرَواand you see بِهاin them

Until they visit your lands and you see there
Carnage among you that makes eyes lower in dread.
