أَخيmy brother وَاللَهِand by God خَيرٌbetter مِنthan أَخيكُمyour brother
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle لَمdid not يَجِدfind بَطَلُa champion مُقاماa place to stand
My brother, by God, is better than your brother,
My brother, by Allah, is better than your brother
When a champion finds nowhere to stand.
When a hero cannot find a place to stay
أَخيmy brother وَاللَهِand by God خَيرٌbetter مِنthan أَخيكُمyour brother
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle لَمdid not يَجِدfind راعٍa shepherd مَساماa pasture
My brother, by God, is better than your brother,
My brother, by Allah, is better than your brother
When a shepherd finds no pasture.
When a shepherd cannot find a pasture
أَخيmy brother وَاللَهِand by God خَيرٌbetter مِنthan أَخيكُمyour brother
إِذاwhen الخَفراتِthe modest women أَبدَينَthey exposed الخِداماthe anklets
My brother, by God, is better than your brother,
My brother, by Allah, is better than your brother
When modest women bare their anklets.
When the guards show their servants
قَتَلتُI killed بِهِfor him أَخاكَyour brother وَخَيرَand the best of سَعدٍSa‘d
فَإِنso if حَرباًwar حُذيفَHudhayf وَإِنand if سَلاماpeace
For him I killed your brother and the best of Sa‘d,
I killed your brother and the best of Saad
So, Hudhayf, be it war or peace.
So if it is war, Hudhaifa, and if it is peace
تَرُدُّrepels الحَربَwar ثعلَبَةُTha‘labah بنُson of سَعدٍSa‘d
بِحَمدِwith praise to اللَهِGod يَرعونَthey pasture البِهاماthe lambs and kids
Tha‘labah son of Sa‘d repels war;
Tha'labah ibn Saad turns back the war
Praise be to God, they pasture the lambs and kids.
By the grace of Allah, they pasture the camels
وتغنيand suffice مُرّةَMurrah الأثرينthe self-seeking ones عناinstead of us
عروجُlame ones الشاءِof the sheep تتركُهleave him قياماstanding
And self-seeking Murrah is spared the need for us,
And Murrah's singing spared us
By lame sheep that leave him standing.
The grazing sheep leave it standing
وَكَيفَand how تَقولُyou say صَبرُsteadfastness بَنيthe sons of حَجانٍHajan
إِذاwhen غَرِضواthey grew weary وَلَمand did not يَجِدواfind مُقاماa place to stand
And how can you speak of the steadfastness of the sons of Hajan,
And how can you say the patience of Banu Hajan
When they grow weary and find no place to stand?
When they were aggrieved and found no place to stay
وَلَولاand were it not for آلُthe house of مرةMurrah قَدcertainly رَأَيتُمyou saw
نَواصِيَهُنَّtheir forelocks يَنضونَthey shake off القَتاماthe dust
And but for the house of Murrah, you would have seen
And were it not for the family of Murrah, you would have seen
Their forelocks shaking off the dust.
Their temples braiding their hair
