- أبغضته من بعدما بذل الرضاYou hated him after goodwill had been offered;

- بقيت أمير المؤمنين على الدهرMay you endure, Commander of the Faithful, throughout all time,
- تعز يا خير الورى عن أخTake solace, O best of creation, for the loss of a brother
- حب لأحمد قد فشاLove for Ahmad has spread abroad,
- ذنبي إلى الدهر أني لم أمد يديMy offense against Time is that I did not hold out my hand
- سيدي أنت إنني بك صبYou are my lord; I am lovesick for you.
- شهيداه إن لم تظلميه نحولHis two witnesses—if you do not wrong him—are emaciation,
- ضحك الدهر بعد طول عبوسTime laughed after a long frown,
- عذلت امرءا في عشقه ليس يعذركI reproached a man for his love; he does not excuse you.
- غشيتني من الهموم غواشVeils of sorrow have enveloped me,
- قل لخير الكفاة أحمدSay to the finest of administrators, Ahmad, most praised among
- قل للخليفة ترب العلم والأدبSay to the caliph, companion of learning and letters,
- ما على الأرض مادح لكم قبلىNo one on earth praised you before
- متيم متلفه تلددهA man enslaved by love, undone by his bewildered restlessness;
- نعم الورى بسوابغ النعماءHumankind prospered amid abundant blessings,
- هنيئا للوزير قضاء دينCongratulations to the vizier on a debt repaid,
- وصلت رقعة الأمير الرئيسThe letter has arrived from the emir, the chief,
- وفزت بما تهوى وصالت على العداAnd you won what you desire, and against the foes charged
- يا أميرا ما رأيناO prince, we have never seen
- يا مذيقي غصة الكمدO you who make me taste the choking bitterness of sorrow,
- يا مليح الدلال رفقا بصبO lovely in your coyness, be gentle with a lovesick lover,
