يَاO مُذِيقِيyou who make me taste غُصَّةَthe choking bitterness of الْكَمَدِsorrow
مُشْعِلاًa kindler لِلنَّارِof the fire فيin كَبِدِيmy liver
O you who make me taste the choking bitterness of sorrow,
kindling fire in my liver!
أَلِذَنْبٍfor a fault? كَانَwas هَجْرُكَyour abandonment لِيof me
أَوْor دَلاَلَthe coy airs of الْغُنْجِcoquetry والْغِيَدِand supple grace
Was your abandonment of me for some fault,
or the coy airs of coquetry and supple grace?
حِيْنَwhen أَزْمَعْتَyou resolved on الرَّحِيلَdeparture ضُحىًin the forenoon
أَزْمَعَتْresolved رُوحِيmy soul عَنِfrom الْجَسَدِthe body
When you resolved to depart one forenoon,
my soul resolved to depart from the body.
ماnot أُبالِيI care مَاwhat يَفُوتُpasses by إِذَاif
ظَفِرَتْwon بِالوَصْلِunion مِنْكَfrom you يَدِيmy hand
I care nothing for what I miss, if
my hand wins union with you.
قُلْsay لِخيْرِto the best of النَّاسِpeople كُلِّهِمall of them
لاnot أُحاشِيI except فيهِin this مِنْof أَحَدِanyone
Say to the best of all people—
I make no exception for anyone—
الَّذِيthe one who يَرْضَىis pleased الإِلهُGod بِهِwith him
مُذْهِباًa dispeller لِلْغِيِّof error بِالرَّشْدِthrough right guidance
the one with whom God is pleased,
who dispels error through right guidance:
حَاسِدِيthe one who envies me فيfor حُسْنِthe goodness of فِعْلِكِyour treatment بِيof me
غَيْرُnot مَعْذُولٍblamed عَلَىfor الْحَسَدِenvy
Whoever envies me for your kindness to me
is not to be reproached for his envy.
قَدْindeed دَهَتْنِيhas struck me الآنَnow دَاهِيةٌa calamity
وَسْمُهَاits mark بَاقٍenduring عَلَىfor الأَبَدِeternity
A calamity has now struck me;
its mark will remain forever.
أَنْتَyou يَاO أَعْلَىloftiest of المُلُوكِkings يَداًin generosity of hand
عُدتِيmy resource فِيهَاagainst it وَمُعْتَمَدِيand my mainstay
You, O most generous-handed of kings,
are my resource against it and my mainstay.
تَوْبَتِيmy repentance قَدْindeed ذَلَّgrew weak جانِبُهَاits strength
بِيعَwas sold مِنْهاfrom it النَّوْمُsleep بِالسُّهْدِfor sleeplessness
My repentance has grown weak;
its sleep has been sold for sleeplessness.
ضَعَّفَweakened لحرمَانُdeprivation قُوَّتَهاits strength
بَعْدَafter حُسْنِexcellence of الأَيْدِstrength والجَلَدِand endurance
Deprivation has weakened its strength,
after fine vigor and endurance.
لاdo not تُطِعْobey فِينَاconcerning us الْوُشَاةَthe slanderers فَقَدْfor indeed
جَعَلُونَاthey made us ضُحْكَةُthe laughingstock of الْبَلَدِthe town
Do not heed the slanderers against us, for
they have made us the town's laughingstock,
حِينَwhen فَازُواthey won دُونَنَاrather than us بِيَدٍa favor
مِنْكَfrom you واسْتَوْلُواand took possession عَلَىof الأَمَدِthe goal
when they, rather than us, won a favor
from you and carried off the prize.
وَرَأَيْناهَاand we saw it مُعَايَنَةًwith our own eyes
إِنَّindeed هَذَاthis مُنْتهَىthe utmost of الْكَمِدِsorrow
And we saw it with our own eyes—
this is sorrow at its utmost—
بَعْدَafter أَنْthat كُنَّاwe were بِفَضْلِكَthrough your bounty فِيin
طِيبِpleasantness of عَيْشٍlife دُونَهُمْto their exclusion رَغَدِabundant
after, through your bounty, we had enjoyed
a sweet, abundant life they did not share.
فَأَنِلْناso grant us مَاwhat أَنَلْتَهُمُyou granted them
خَمْسَةًfive تُوفِيexceed عَلَىabove الْعَدَدِthe number
So grant us what you granted them:
five more than that number;
أوْor فَزِدْنَاthen give us more مِثْلَas عَادَتِناour custom
لَيْسis not غَمْرُthe flood of الْجُودِgenerosity كَالثَّمَدِlike a meager pool
or give us more, as we are accustomed;
a flood of bounty is no meager pool.
عِنْدَناwe have مِنْfrom فِعْلِهِمْtheir deeds تِرَةٌa grievance
فَأَزِلْهاso remove it الْيَوْمَtoday بِالْقَوَدِthrough retaliation
Their deeds have left us with a grievance;
so wipe it away today through requital.
لَمْnot تَزَلْyou have ceased بِالْبَذْلِin giving تَبْدَأُنَاyou begin with us
فاجْعَلَنْهاso do make it الآنَnow دُونَrather than غَدِtomorrow
You have always begun with us in your giving;
so make it now, not tomorrow.
وَلْيَكُنْand let it be إِنْif شِئْتَyou wish مُكْتَتماًkept secret
إِنَّناindeed we مِنْهُمْagainst them عَلَىon رَصَدِwatch
And let it be kept secret, if you wish:
we are keeping watch on them.
وَأَزِلْand dispel نَحْساًill luck بِرُؤْيَتِهِمْat the sight of them
طَالعاًrising مِنْهُمْfrom them بِمُفْتَقَدِthrough absence
And dispel the ill luck at the sight of them,
rising from them, through their absence.
وَعَلَيْهِمْand upon them لاnot عَلَيْكَupon you بِهِمْon their account
دابرَاتُcalamities of السُّوءِevil وَالنَّكَدِand misery
And upon them—not upon you on their account—
may the calamities of evil and misery fall.
