May you endure, Commander of the Faithful, throughout all time,

Despite your enemies, with your prohibitions and commands obeyed.

You soothed a burning anguish that, but for you, would have been fatal,

And lightened a care my breast was too narrow to bear.

And fulfilled your duty to God in slaying a band

Who spread corruption and unbelief throughout the lands,

And in avenging a brother who ruled mankind; nor were you

One to neglect vengeance, whether fought over or long forgotten.

And you are no lion whose prey has escaped him,

    Though already caught on his fang and claw;

Nor a serpent whose bitten victim is saved by a breathed charm,

Nor a keen sword that falls to strike yet fails to cut.

So may you live for God's faith, mending its weakness,

And may you be granted the longest life you desire.

And oh, would that I were blessed with a glimpse of you,

Through which I could render the full due of praise and thanks.
