سَيِّدِيmy lord أَنْتَyou إِنَّنيindeed I بِكَfor you صَبٌّlovesick
بَيْنَbetween أَيدِيthe hands of الْهُمُومcares والشَّوْقand longing نَهْبُprey
You are my lord; I am lovesick for you.
My master, I am ardently in love with you
Prey in the hands of cares and longing.
Amid worries and longing I am plundered
وشَفِيعِيand my intercessor إِلَيْكَwith you أَنِّيthat I مُحبٌa lover
وقَدِيماًand for a long time أَحِبُّI love مَنْone who لاَnot يُحِبُّloves
And my intercessor with you is that I love.
My intercessor with you is that I'm a lover
And long have I loved one who does not love.
And I've always loved those who don't love back
بَعَثَsent الحُبُّlove ليto me سَقاماًsickness فَأَعْدَىthen infected

بِيَme حُزْناًsorrow مداوماًconstant ماnot يَغِبُّlets up
Love sent me sickness, and infected
Love has made me sick and thus destroyed me
me with constant sorrow that never relents.
With lasting sorrow that doesn't go away

I have no resolve with which to console my soul
I have no intention to comfort my soul
for what it has seen, nor do I have a heart.
For what it saw, nor do I have a heart

My patience is lost, and hopes have disappointed me—
My patience is gone and hopes betrayed me
false hopes in which the lovesick delight.
Lies that delight those who pour out tears

Yet I have been spared a reproacher's words,
Except I was relieved by the words of the critic
a burden and anguish upon the heart.
It's worry upon my heart and distress

The reproachers rebuked me over you, then said:
The blamers blamed you and said
"No blame falls on one who loves someone like you."
No blame upon one who loved the likes of you

You have a smooth cheek, rose-tinted in color,
You have a reddish cheek, smooth
and a sweet mouth whose saliva is pleasant.
A mouth of sweet conversation, fresh

A forehead where beauty glistened
like a crescent from which veils have lifted.
Like a new moon unveiled from its wrap

Fluttering, pleased eyelids
and tender speech, feminine in its expression.
Whose feminine speech is moist

A figure wherein the breeze takes pride
swaying—a slender branch.
Bending the branch of the willow

Beauty has flourished throughout you, except
Beauty flourished in all of you
that my share of all this is drought.
Except my share of all that is barren

My soul's anguish for you! If love were fair,
If love were just it would have humbled you to me this morning
what is unyielding in you would yield to me this morning.
Yet that was difficult from you

I do not name you, for fear; instead I turn
I don't call you fickle, rather I avert
an eye away from you, its tears pouring out for you.
My teary eye from you as it pours out

And you counted love against me as sins;
You counted love for me as sins
if that is so, the beauty of your face is a sin.
If so, then the beauty of your face is the sin

Age has wronged me as you have, until
You wronged me like your wronging gray hair
my head turned gray; gray hair's summons is an insult.
Until my head grayed and the call to white hair a cause

Thirty years stripped me of youth's robe,
Thirty took from me the garb of youth
and gray hair has further plunder after that.
And after that white hair had the spoils

And turned the black steeds upon my head to gray—
It brought anxiety to my head in the form of gray hair
gray steeds are of no use in pleasure's cavalry.
Not recompensed by the steeds of vanity and gray hair

If he has set out, making for Damascus,
If he traveled intentionally to Damascus
and folded me away as the west folds away the sun,
And folded up like the setting sun in the west

he is the heart's remembrance wherever it inclines,
Then for my heart wherever his mention turned
and a figure before the eye wherever it turns.
And for my eye wherever its goal inclined

The minister's kindly regard has made up for him,
The good opinion of the minister replaced him
for he is lord of generosity and noble deeds.
Thus he is for generosity and noble deeds the lord
