Congratulations to the vizier on a debt repaid,

    By which Time has become glad of eye;

And on the return of a vizierate brought to him,

Like a beloved's nearness restored after separation.

Abu Abd al-Ilah, the most eminent of capable men,

Who has given freely of gold and silver.

May that also gladden his brother Ya‘qub,

And their noble counterpart, Abu al-Husayn.

They are Time's two moons and its two radiant brows,

Relieving the realm of disgrace and blemish.

Within it, through counsel and vigilance, they have placed

Its interests in the station of the two eyes.

And corruption, once it had risen high,

Could be brought low only by the reforms of these two.

May that also gladden Abd Allah through him,

His young man—for he is one of the two blessings.

A crescent moon the nights have not worn away,

Nor has the passing of the Farqadayn diminished it.

Eminence attends him in succession, while he never flags,

And he resembles him like twin delights of the eye.

As when you set down a line from a book,

And did not dot an ‘ayn to make it a ghayn.

A vizier favored by the days, exalted

    Above his enemies, open-handed.

In generosity, he holds wealth cheap through lavish favors,

And the ascent to generosity is hard, not easy.

Time will repay him, with a long life

And the bestowal of leadership, every debt.

Robes of honor have grown proud upon him,

Proud of one lofty in spirit and lofty at both summits.

Their blackness has dispelled the darkness of the nights,

As it makes the black of both eyes shine.

At his girdle, the ornaments upon them gleam,

As the stars of the two Shi‘ras shone.

Thin hanging attachments from them are fastened [uncertain reading],

To a polished blade with two fine cutting edges.

Like his judgment, which acts through the nights

And through the days as the two luminaries act.

So may God exalt all our masters,

    And preserve them as long as the Farqadayn endure;

And clip away from them the talon of death,

    With their wishes near and their death far away;

And dominion over humankind, and the serenity of an age

That casts an utter pall upon their foes.

For how often they were reproached for excessive kindness,

Yet they did not heed the two reproachers' rebuke.

I say, from what I know, words of truth,

Far removed from falsehood and blemish.

They have indeed safeguarded the vizierate after dishonor,

    And adorned it when it had been unadorned;

With judgment enlightened for their allies,

    And stern toward the adversary, not yielding;

And pens empowered to judge their enemies,

Like the judgment of the sword and the Rudayni spear.

With them the spear has no need of a straightening tool,

And the sword has no need of a smith's repair.

And letters flutter, bearing what we desire,

Through which both horizons are set aright.

You see destinies ascending toward him,

    Trailing between wrapping and clay.

Your reward for setting a realm aright

Is the reward of witnessing Uhud or Hunayn.

Among the sons of the freeborn, you have scaled a mountain

Whose spur towers above Dhu Ru‘ayn.

Your Muhammad has raised you still higher,

And Ya‘qub, noble on both sides.

    كَذَاكَ يَجِيءُ نَجْلُ الْفاضِلَيْنِ

    From them both you inherited generosity and excellence;

Thus comes the offspring of the two virtuous men.

You have indeed made peace between my time

And me, through generosity, despite the foes.

I shall discharge duties in praising you,

As the duties owed to both parents are discharged.
