غَشِيَتْنِيhave enveloped me مِنَof الهُمُومِsorrows غَواشٍenveloping afflictions
لِعَذُولٍbecause of a reproacher يَلُومُhe blames فِيكَconcerning you ووَاشِand a slanderer
Veils of sorrow have enveloped me,
The sorrows have overwhelmed me, oh how they gush
because of a reproacher who blames me over you, and a slanderer.
For one who finds faults in you, in blame and hush
لَوْif only يُلاَقواthey would experience الَّذِيwhat لَقِيتُI experienced مِنof الْوَجْpassion (word continues next line)
دcompletion of 'passion' لِشَوْقٍbecause of longing بَيْنَbetween الجَوانِحِthe ribs نَاشِgrowing
If only they felt the passion I have felt,
If they but knew what I have come to feel
from longing growing between my ribs.
Of longing between ribs for you so real
نَمَّdivulged بِالسِّرِّabout the secret عِنْدُهُمْbefore them دَمْعُtears عَيْنِيmy eye
إِنَّindeed سِرَّthe secret المُحِبِّthe lover بِالْدَّمْعِthrough tears فَاشِيrevealed
My eye's tears betrayed the secret before them;
My teardrops before them have flowed in a stream
indeed, a lover's secret is revealed through tears.
For a lover's secret is by tears seen
مَنْwho عَذِيرِيmy defender لظَالِمٍagainst a cruel one أَنَاI مِنْهُfrom him
فِيin زَمَانِthe time of الوصَالِunion لِلْهَجْرِof abandonment خَاشِيfearful
Who will defend me against a cruel one, from whom I
Who can I blame that I fear estrangement
fear abandonment even in the time of union?
In days of union from one so impatient
أَخَذَhe took الْقَدَّthe stature مَنْfrom (read as مِنْ) قَضِيبٍa bough رَطِيبٍtender

He took his stature from a tender bough,
He has plucked straight branches from a sweet rod
and mirrored the eyes of thirsty gazelles.
And told thirsty gazelles where waters trod
