مَاno عَلَىon الأَرْضِthe earth مَادِحٌa praiser لَكُمُof you قَبْbefore (first part)
لِيme (completing 'before me') وَحَقِّيand my due مَاwhat is بَيْنَكُمْamong you مَهْضُومُdenied
No one on earth praised you before
No one praised you before me while my right was neglected between you
me; yet my due among you is denied.
I am oppressed among people and when I dispute with them I lose
أَنَاI منْfrom بَيْنِamong ذَاthese الْوَرَىpeople مَظْلُومُwronged

Of all these people, I am wronged,
Fate overlooks me while my status with them is known
and whenever I dispute with them, I am defeated.
How many like me until the minister denounces me as an evildoer
تَتَخطَّانِيَpass me by الْحُظُوظُthe fortunes فَاسَىso I grieve
ومَكَانِيand my standing منْfrom عِلْمِهِمْtheir knowledge مَعْلُومُknown
Fortunes pass me by, and I grieve,
The choice of the noble one has surpassed me while he chooses the excellent with insight
though they well know my standing.
He is the highest in glory and virtue, this is heavy luck that I know
كَمْhow many تُرَىdo you see فيin الزَّمَانِthe age مِثْلِيَlike me حَتَّىso that

How many like me do you see in this age, that
This is only to delay luck whose right is to prioritize when justice is served
the minister did not seek me among those he seeks?
It is unthinkable that I blame Abul Hussein, he is too revered for that
قَدْindeed تَعَدَّانِيَhas passed me by اخْتِيَارُthe choice كَرِيمٍof a noble man
وَهُوَand he طَبٌّexpert بالاخْتِيَارِin choosing عَلَيْمُknowledgeable
A noble man's choice has passed me by,
If I blamed him while others were favored with the minister's company, I would be miserable
though he is expert in choosing and well informed.
Do you think I was deficient in knowledge so pledging fealty and prohibition overwhelmed me
وَهُوَand he أَعْلَىhigher than الْكُفَاةَthe capable men مَجْداًin glory وفَضْلاًand excellence
إنَّindeed ذَاthat ماas far as عَلِمْتُI know حَظٌّa fortune جَسِيمُimmense
He stands above the capable in glory and excellence;
If time endowed me with solid glory, intelligence and education would not satisfy me
that, as far as I know, is immense good fortune.
How can we repay him with the finest words while he has the likes of me as a companion
لَيْسَnot هذاthis إِلاَّexcept لتَأْخِيرِfor delaying حَظٍّa fortune
حَقُّهits due حينَwhen يُنْصَفُit is treated justly التَّقْدِيمُprecedence
This is only the postponement of a fortune
Do you reckon the regretful one would accept this? No, by the Reviver of bones when they crumble
whose rightful place, when justice is done, is foremost.
Where are those who sat with the Caliphs before me when stations were easily obtained
لَسْتُI do not أشْكُوcomplain of أَبَاAbu (father of) الْحُسَيْنِal-Husayn وَحَاشاand far be it

I do not complain of Abu al-Husayn—far be it
My spirit is calm and my thoughts aloof from the superfluities of wishes and my glances are sound
from him; reverence for him stands against that.
My words are sufficient except explaining knowledge and my side is straight
أَنَاI لَوْif لُمْتُهُI blamed him وَقَدْand already خُصَّwas singled out غَيْرِيsomeone else

If I blamed him, when another had been singled out
Help me against time whose offense to me is great
for closeness to the minister, I would be blameworthy.
I have complaints that the birds of litigation fly to, seeking success from you
أَتُرَانِيdo you think I أَخْلَلْتُfell short بالعِلْمِin learning حَتَّىso that

Do you think I have fallen short in learning, so that
The junior minister is their leader, and what a fine leader!
declaring lawful and unlawful has eluded me?
It is a debt on him and he is filled with justice against injustice and my fate is oppressive
لَوْif رَمَىcast بِيme الزَّمَانُtime عِزَّاًglory تَلِيداًancestral

Had time cast me into ancestral glory,
Ali has supremacy over people, brought about by his majesty, ancient
intelligence and instruction would not have schooled me.
He inherited glory from the excellent ancestors, uncountable noble ones
كَيْفَhow نُجْلِيshall we unveil عَلَيْهِbefore him أَبْكَارَvirgins لَفْظٍof speech

How shall we unveil before him the virgins of speech,
He surpasses the minister in every merit, only the noble can rival the noble
when among mankind he has a boon companion like me?
Souls that love noble deeds, so they were scattered in the union of bodies
أَتَظُنُّdo you think النِّدَامَthe boon companions تَرْضَىwill be satisfied بِهذَاwith this
لاَno ومُحْيِيand by the Reviver of العِظَامَthe bones وَهِيَwhile they are رَمِيمُdecayed
Do you think the boon companions would accept this?
Thus Ali and Muhammad the two sons of Ali, their branches are pure and their roots sublime
No, by Him who revives bones when they are dust!
One is a full moon for us and this a new crescent, one is a breeze for us and this a gentle wind
أَيْنَwhere مَنْone who جَالَسَsat with الخَلائِفَthe caliphs قَبْلِيbefore me

Where is one who sat with caliphs before me,
The kings have not begotten one with such perfection, he is worthy revenge on the enemies
fully composed when reason is unsettled?
His speech preoccupies the minds with beauty, overwhelming them without tiring
طَائِرِيmy bird سَاكنٌstill وفكْرِيand my thought عَزُوفٌaverse

My bird is still, and my thought turns away
Eyes recover their beauty from him like a loan from a debtor
from excessive wishes; my gaze is innocent.
With influential speech that gladdens the loyal and turns away the enemy, though immense
وكَلاَمِيand my speech قَدْرُthe measure of الكِفَايَةsufficiency إِلاَّexcept

My speech is only what suffices, except
If a father wished one unlike him and submitted his matter to him for arbitration
when explaining learning; my conduct is upright.
One favored by fate has not produced his equal, nor has one who lives luxuriously resembled him
فأَعِينُواso help عَلَىagainst الزَّمانِtime بِعَدْوِيwith a plea for redress

إِنَّindeed ذَنْبَthe offense of الزَّمَانِtime عِنْدِيin my eyes عَظِيمُgreat
So help me against time through a plea for redress;
If the stars in the heaven of glory had a choice, we would say they chose him
time's offense against me is great.
Time will not produce one with similar merits, this is doubtless sterile
لِيَI have عِدَاتٌpromises طَيْرُthe birds of التَّقَاضِيdemanding payment عَلَيْهَاover them

I have promises over which the birds of demanding payment
Every treasure in a necklace, they locked it but he supersedes and submits
circle, seeking fulfillment from you.
O people of Ali, you are stars giving light to the world, never clouded
وَالْوَزِيرُand the minister الصَّغِيرُthe younger فِيَهَاregarding them زَعِيمٌa guarantor

The younger minister stands surety for them,
The beautiful qualities of fortune camped in you and shone from them an immense pearl
for what I hope for—an excellent guarantor!
A pen encompassing eloquence and beauty that no region contained the like of you

They are a debt upon him, and he is solvent,
Scrolls boast of it in beauty like a trained horse proud of its saddle
granting redress against foes, while my age is oppressive.
And speech like flowers of basil whose stars appeared from it
لِعَليٍّfor 'Ali عَلَىover الأنَامِmankind اعتِلاَءٌascendancy

حَادِثٌnewly attained مِنْfrom جَلاَلِهِhis majesty وَقدِيمٌand ancient
'Ali holds ascendancy over mankind,
The meanings' eyes encompassed it and its sides were illuminated from the darkness
both newly attained through his majesty and ancient.
If you water it, consistent generosity will pour from which the fertile land benefits

He inherited glory from lofty noble lords,
And clouds of bestowal so generous their poured forth clouds are limited
radiant men, among whom none is dark.
Praising you is an obligation like a duty without nonsense or sin
فَهُوَso he يَنْحُوfollows الْوَزِيرَthe minister فِيin كُلِّevery فَضْلٍexcellence

لَيْسَnot يَنْحُوfollows الكَرِيمَthe noble man إِلاَّexcept كَرِيمُa noble man
He follows the minister in every excellence;
It is not because I was late in reaching you that I am anxious
only a noble man follows a noble man.
Whenever I came, a veil prevented me and ambition was raised against me

Souls wholly devoted to loving noble deeds,
My eyebrows frowned at their winks and a reprehensible glancing emerged for the eyes
divided by bodies despite their harmony.
The winks of their eyes shone for me with which the feeble gazes are sick
فعَلَيٌّso 'Ali مُحَمَّدُMuhammad بنُson of عَليٍّ'Ali

طَابَare good فَرْعَاهُمَاtheir two branches وَطَابَand are good الأُرُومُthe roots
Thus 'Ali is Muhammad son of 'Ali;
So I am to them like an disliked person who is not pitied by a merciful breast
their two branches are good, and their roots are good.
Their nature has apparent harshness, among affliction they are not kind

That one is our full moon, and this one a crescent;
I have no special company or generality with them but see myself wandering while others settle
that one is our air, and this one a breeze.
Do not blame me for praising them, the torment of the veil is painful to me
لَمْnot تَلِدْhave borne مِثْلَهُhis equal الْمُلُوكُkings كَمَالاًin perfection

Kings have never borne his equal in perfection;
It came in revelation, after the veil is only hellfire
he is vengeance upon the enemy, putting them to sleep.
They are all enemies if given permission, and intimate friends without permission
مَنْطِقًspeech يَشْغَلُcaptivates اللِّحَاظَthe glances بِحُسْنٍwith beauty

Speech that captivates the gaze with beauty,
They slumber from them like the People of the Cave, if not for their dog and the inscription
so the gaze stays upon it, never departing.
Unlike Jarir's claim, their neighborhood did not birth them, and they are all refined

The eyes return to him to reclaim beauty,
I do not insult them but I am necessitated to blame, which is disgraceful
as a creditor reclaims a debt.
Your gifts are truly the sea, the devil of their prevention is stoned

And a decisiveness that offers the friend a feast of joy,
Will the truth dry the land of my pasture while their rain is poisoned?
and sends the enemy away choking with grief.
From their rain I get sprinkles and front while for others is the thicker and viler
لَوْif تَمَنَّاُهwished for him وَالدٌa father مَاnot عَدَاهُwould look beyond him

Were a father to wish for him, he would seek none beyond him,
My luck slept, so wake it with generosity, it is your perfection after beginning
if the decision in that matter were his.
I complained to you of what I face like an orphan complains to the guardian

Time's near-term breeding stock has never yielded his like,
Everyone who was devoid of your affection and company is disdained
nor has any bidder sought to buy his equal.
In a time you beautified with generosity, and without you it is miserable
لَوْif يُحَابَىshow favor النُّجُومُthe stars فِيin طَالِعِthe ascendant of الْمَجْglory (first part)

Were the stars to show favor at glory's ascendant,
I have revered you for thirty years but I am distanced and stoned
we would say the stars had favored him there.
I have no special company or intimacy with you but see myself wandering while others settle

On earth no one praised you before me while my right between you is wasted
beyond doubt, it is barren of such.
When the sword of praise armored with resolve is unsheathed before you none sharpened it

Every stake others have forfeited in lordship—
I get from it the belly of the journey and text while others get the sheath and quiver
his is the lead in it, and the acknowledged victory.
While the eyes of hopes turn away from you not glancing at you enduringly
أَنْتُمُyou يَاO بَنِيsons of عَلِيٍّ'Ali نُجُومٌstars

You, sons of 'Ali, are stars
My praise preceded and my permission silenced, none like this decree was fortified
whose light for mankind is never clouded.
A praise that collared the necks of meanings, their customs were suspended by its adornments

The beauties of fortune have pitched their tents among you;
Your attributes preoccupied them with wealth, they grew weary of it and the poisons thrived
from them a mighty pearl has shone for mankind.
So it is beauty for your expectant one and glory against your enemies like shooting stars
قَلَمٌa pen جَامِعُcombining بَيَاناًeloquence وَحُسْناًand beauty

A pen combining eloquence and beauty—
It has illuminations for your family and inauspiciousness for your detractors, determined
no land has held your equals in wielding it.
Allah has forbidden my side to dry from your bestowal and the inviolable

The sheets of paper vaunt their beauty through it,
Time has guaranteed my avoidance of you both being distanced and the afflicted is oppressed
like brocade whose patterns delight the eye.
Judge me regarding the poem I said about you, can any string of pearls match it?

And speech like the flowers of a garden,
It is wording creation overpowered within it, if you are unharmed the like of it is non-existent
from which stars have appeared before the stars.
And it surpassed the threshold of your honor when the time was miserable

The choicest meanings have surrounded it,
While your patio is joyful and blissful
and darkness has grown bright on either side.
You are all - sooner and later - perfected from the lofty, safe and sound

Yours, if you water it with generosity, is a downpour
No one on earth praised you before me and my right was wasted between you
whose drops fall, and fertility that invites blame.
When the sword of praise armored with resolve was unsheathed before you none sharpened it

beside which its piled-up clouds fall short.

Praising you is incumbent upon me, like a prescribed duty,
My praise preceded and my permission silenced, none like this decree was fortified
with neither idle speech nor sin in it.
A praise that collared the necks of meanings, their customs were suspended by its adornments
لَيْسَnot لِيfor me فيin تأَخُّرِيmy delay عَنْكُمُaway from you ذَنْfault (first part)
بٌfault (last part) مِنْfor أَجْلِهِits sake مَهْمُومُtroubled
I bear no guilt in my delay in coming to you,
It is wording creation overpowered within it, if you are unharmed the like of it is non-existent
no fault for which I should be troubled.
And it surpassed the threshold of your honor when the time was miserable
كُلَّمَاwhenever جئْتُI came حَالَstood between دُونِيbefore me حِجَابٌa barrier
وَتَعالَتْand mounted لَهُbecause of it عَلَيَّover me الْهُمُمُanxieties
Whenever I came, a barrier stood before me,
While your patio is joyful and blissful
and worries mounted over me because of it.
You are all - sooner and later - perfected from the lofty, safe and sound
كُسِرَتْwere contracted دُنِيَnear me الْحَوَاجِبُthe eyebrows غَمْزاًin mocking signals
وَبَدَاand appeared للْعُيُونِto the eyes لَمْحٌa glance ذَمِيمُugly
Eyebrows contracted near me in mocking signals,
and an ugly glance appeared to the eyes.
لَمَعتْflashed لِيat me بِخُلَّبِwith deceptive الْوَمْضِflashes مِنْهاfrom them
بِنَوَاحِيَّall around me بِهِwith it لِحَاظٌglances سَقِيمُsickly
From them flashed at me deceptive gleams,
sickly glances all around me bearing that glitter.
فَكَأَنِّيso I am as though لَدَيْهِمُto them شَخْصُthe figure of بَوٍّa stuffed camel-calf
لَمْnot تُعَطَّفُinclines tenderly عَلَيْهِtoward it ظِئْرٌa foster-mother رَءومُaffectionate
As though I were, to them, a stuffed camel-calf,
toward which no tender foster-mother inclines.
طَبْعُهُمtheir nature ظَاهِرُplain in القَساوَةِharshness فَظٌّcrude
لَيْسَnot فِيهِمْamong them مَعَamid الْبَلاءِaffliction رَحِيمُa merciful one
Their nature is plainly hard and harsh;
not one of them is merciful amid affliction.
لَيْسَnot لِيfor me فِيin الْوُصُولِgaining access وَقْتُa time اخْتِصَاصٍfor special admission
وكَذَاand likewise فِيin الْعُمُومِgeneral admission مَالِيI have no عُمُومُgeneral access
I have no allotted time for a private audience,
nor do I have a place at the public one.
فَأُسِيمُso I let graze الْكُرُوبَsorrows فِيin مَسْرَحِthe pasture of الْقَلْthe heart (first part)
بِthe heart (last part) وَمَرْعَىand the pasture of الْحِجَابِexclusion مَرْعَىa pasture وَخِيمُunwholesome
So I let my sorrows graze in the pasture of my heart,
and the pasture of exclusion is an unwholesome pasture.
مَالَهَاthey have no مَشْرَبٌa drinking-place عَلَيْهِthere مَعَdespite الظِّمْthirst (first part)
ءِthirst (last part) وَوِرْدِand the watering of الإِخْمَاسِfive-day intervals إلاَّexcept الْحَمِيمُboiling water
They have no drink there, despite their thirst
and five-day waits for water, except scalding water.
وَالَّذِِيand what يُوجِبُcalls for الْمَدِيحَpraise لِشَرْحِيfor my account
جَمُّهُits abundance الْفَاءُshade (uncertain reading) وَالنَّبَاتُand vegetation الْجَمِيمُluxuriant
What calls for praise in my description
is its abundant shade and luxuriant growth.
لاَdo not تَكُرُّواrepeat عَلَيَّagainst me فِيهِمْconcerning them مَلاَماًblame
فَعَذَابُfor the torment of الْحِجَابِexclusion عِنْدِيto me أَلِيمُpainful
Do not heap blame upon me concerning them;
the torment of exclusion is painful to me.
وكَذَاand thus جَاءَcame فيin التَّلاوَةِthe recitation نَصَّاًexplicitly
لَيْسَnot بَعْدَbeyond الْحِجَابِthe barrier إلاَّexcept الجَحِيمُHell
Thus too it came expressly in the recitation:
beyond the barrier there is only Hell.
كُلُّهُمْall of them فِيat أَوَانِthe time of إِذْنِpermission عَدُوٌّan enemy
وَصَدِيقٌand a friend فِيat غَيْرِother than إِذْنٍpermission حَمِيمُintimate
At the time of granting permission, every one of them is an enemy,
but outside that time, a close friend.
وَنِيَامٌand asleep عَنْهُمْheedless of them كَنَوْمةَlike the sleep of أَهْلِthe people of الthe

They sleep heedless of them, like the People of the
Cave, but for their threshold and al-Raqim.
لَمْnot يَلْدْهُمْbegot them جِوَارُthe neighborhood of سَعْدٍSa'd كَمَاas قَاsaid (first part)
لَsaid (last part) جَرِيرٌJarir وكُلُّهْمُand all of them مَرْكُومُheaped together
Sa'd's neighborhood did not beget them, as
Jarir said; all of them are heaped together.
مَاnot أُعَلِّيpile up عَلَيْهِمُupon them اللَّوْمَreproach لكِنْbut
مُلْزِمِيone who forces me فِيهِمُconcerning them المَلاَمَto blame ذَمِيمُblameworthy
I do not pile reproach upon them, but
whoever forces me to blame them is blameworthy.
وَعَطَايَاكَand your gifts إِنَّهَاindeed they are فَيْضُthe overflow of بَحْرٍa sea
إنَّindeed شَيْطَانَthe devil of مَنْعِهِمْtheir withholding لَرَجِيمُsurely accursed
Your gifts are indeed the overflow of a sea;
the devil of their withholding is surely accursed.
أَمِنَis it of الحَقِّjustice أَنْthat يَجِفَّshould dry ثَرَىthe soil of رَبْdwelling (first part)
عِيmy dwelling (last part) مِنْكُمfrom you وغَيْثُهُمْand their rain مَسْجُومُpouring down
Is it right that the soil of my dwelling should dry
for lack of your gifts, while their rain pours down?
لِيَmine مِنْfrom غَيْثِهِhis rain رَذَاذٌdrizzle وَطَلٌand dew
وَلِغَيْرِيand for others الأَجَشُّthe deep-roaring rain مِنْهُof it الْهَزِيمُthunderous
Mine from his rain are drizzle and dew,
while others get its deep, thunderous downpour.
نَامَslept حَظِّيmy fortune فَأَيْقَظُوهُso awaken it بِجُودٍwith generosity
إِنَّهُindeed it is بَعْدَafter بَدْئِكُمْyour beginning تَتْمِيمُcompletion
My fortune has slept; awaken it with generosity.
After your beginning, this would be completion.
قَدْindeed تَشَكَّيْتُI complained of مَاwhat أُلاَقِيI encounter إِلَيْكُمْto you
مِثْلَjust like مَاas يَشْتَكِيcomplains of الْوَصِيَّthe guardian يَتِيمُan orphan
I have complained to you of what I endure,
as an orphan complains of his guardian.
كُلُّevery مَنْone whom أَخْطَأْتْهُhas missed him رَحْمَةُthe mercy of عَطْفٍtenderness
مِنْfrom نَدَاكُمْyour bounty وَأُنْسكُمْand your companionship مَزْحُومُpushed aside
Everyone whom the mercy of tenderness misses
from your bounty and companionship is pushed aside.
فِيin زَمَانٍan age طَرَّزْتُمُوهُyou embroidered it بِجُودٍwith generosity
وَهُوَand it لَوْلاَكُمُwithout you زَمَانٌan age لَئِيمُvile
In an age you have embroidered with generosity,
which, without you, would be a vile age.
لِيI have بِكُمْwith you حُرْمَةٌa claim to regard ثَلاثِينَthirty عَاماًyears
غَيْرَbut أَنِّيthat I am مُبَاعَدٌkept distant مَرْجُومُpelted with stones
For thirty years I have had a claim to your regard,
yet I am kept far away and pelted with stones.
لَيْسَnot لِيfor me مِنْكُمُfrom you اخْتِصَاصٌspecial favor بِأُنْسٍwith companionship
بَلْrather أُرَىI am seen ظَاعِناًdeparting وَغَيْرِيand others مُقِيمُremaining
I have no special share in your companionship;
rather, I am seen departing while others remain.
مَاno عَلَىon الأَرْضِthe earth مَادِحٌa praiser لَكُمُof you قَبْbefore (first part)
لِيme (completing 'before me') وَحَقِّيand my due ماwhat is بَيْنَكُمْamong you مَهْضُومُdenied
No one on earth praised you before
me; yet my due among you is denied.
حينَwhen سَيْفُthe sword of الْمَدِيحpraise مُدَرَّعُclad in الْغِمْthe sheath (first part)
دِthe sheath (last part) لَدَيْكُمamong you مَاnot سَلَّهُdrew it التّصْمِيمُdetermination
When the sword of praise was armored in its sheath
among you, and determination had not drawn it.
لِيَmine مِنْهُof it وَخْدُthe brisk pace of الْمَسِيرِtravel وَنَصٌّand the fastest pace
وَلَغِيرِيand for others خِنَافُهُits rolling gait وَالرَّسِيمand the trot
Mine in it is the brisk stride of travel and the fastest pace,
while others have its rolling gait and its trot.
وَعُيُونُand the eyes of الآمالِhopes تُطْرَفُare forced aside عَنْكُمْfrom you
مَالَهَاthey have no نَحْوَكُمْtoward you لِحَاظٌglances تَدُومُthat endure
The eyes of hope are turned away from you;
they have no glances toward you that endure.
مِدَحِيmy praises سَبَّقٌfront-runners وإِذْنيand my leave to enter سُكَيْتٌa last-place racer
مَاnot قَضَىjudged مِثْلَlike ذَاthis الْقَضَاءِjudgment سَذُومُSadhum
My praises race first, but my admission trails last;
Sadhum never delivered a judgment like this.
مِدَحٌpraises مُلَّكْتwere given mastery over رِقَابَthe necks of الْمَعَانِيmeanings
عُطِّلَتْwere stripped مِنْof حَلْيِهِنَّtheir ornaments الرُّسُومُthe ruins
Praises given mastery over the necks of meanings—
the ruins were left bare of their ornaments.
شَغَلَتْهاdistracted them عُلاَكُمُyour eminence مِنْfrom مَغانٍdwelling-places
سَئِمَتْgrew weary of مَرَّهاits passage عَلَيْهاover them السَّمُومُthe scorching wind
Your eminence distracted them from dwelling-places
that even the scorching wind grew weary of passing over.
فَهُوَso it زَيْنٌan adornment لِمُرْتَجِيكُمْfor those hoping in you وَعِزٌّand honor
وَنُجُومٌand stars عَلَىagainst عِدَاكُمْyour enemies رُجُومَprojectiles
It is adornment and honor for those who hope in you,
and stars hurled against your foes;

وَنُحُوسٌand ill omens لشانئيكُمْfor your haters حُسُومannihilating
and pearls for you whose radiance shines,
and annihilating ill omens for those who hate you.
حَرَّمَforbade اللهُGod أَنْthat يَكُونَshould be جِنابِيmy precinct
مُجْدِباًbarren مِنْof نَدَاكُمُyour bounty وَالْحَرِيمُand the sanctuary
God forbid that my precinct should be
barren of your bounty, and my sanctuary likewise.
ضَامَنِيwronged me الدَّهْرُtime باجْتنَابِكُمُthrough your shunning قُرْnearness (first part)
بِيto me (completing 'my nearness') وَمَنْand whoever ضَامَهُwronged him الزَّمَانُtime مُضِيمُoppressed
Time has wronged me through your avoiding closeness
to me; whoever time wrongs is oppressed.
أَنْصفُونِيtreat me fairly فِيin نَظْمِthe composition of مَاwhat قُلْتُI said فِيكُمْabout you
هَلْdoes يُدَانِيهِapproach it لُؤْلُؤٌpearls مَنْظُومُstrung
Judge me fairly in the verse I have composed about you:
can strung pearls come close to it?
هُوَit لَفْظٌspeech تَحَكَّمَheld sway الطَّبعُnatural talent فِيهِin it

مِثْلُهُits like لاmay not عَدِمْتُكُمْI lose you مَعْدُومٌnonexistent
It is speech over which natural talent holds sway;
its like—may I never lose you—does not exist.
وَتَخَطَّىand may bypass عِرَاصَكُمْyour courtyards بُؤْسُthe misery of دهْرٍtime
وَثَوَتْهَاand may dwell in them مَسِرَّةٌjoy وَنَعِيمُand bliss
May the misery of time pass beyond your courtyards,
and joy and bliss settle within them.
كُلُّكُمْall of you فِيin مُعَجَّلِthe present of الدَّهْرِtime والآand the future (first part)

May all of you, in time's present and its
future, be rich in eminence, healthy and sound.
