يَشْتَكي منْكَ جَفْوَةً وملاَلاَ
O lovely in your coyness, be gentle with a lovesick lover,
O beauty of allure, be gentle with one in sickness
Who complains of your coldness and weariness of him.
Who complains of your coldness and indifference

Illness has voiced what he used to conceal;
Illness has revealed what used to be hidden
So ask the body, if you wish to inquire.

A phantom of you came to him in sleep;
In his sleep a vision of you came to him
Then it saw him—a phantom, just as you wished.
And he saw you as he had wished to envision

The tongues of reproach shun him because of his wasting sickness;
Tongues of torment embrace him for grief
So he no longer recognizes the reproachers.
And so he knows no comforter but you
