ثلاث يصير الحر فيها مشرفا

Three things make a man honored:

وصد الغانيات البيض عني

Roses turned from me, though not from coyness

بانت سعاد وأمس حبلها انقطعا

Happiness has appeared, though yesterday her rope was cut

أيا لهفي ويا حزني جميعا

Oh my longing and oh my sadness altogether

صاحبت عمرا زمانا ثم قلت له

I accompanied you for a time, O Amr ibn Suhan

يا يوم بؤس طلعت شمسه

O day of misery, the sun has risen in misfortune

لعمري لأهل الشام أطعن بالقنا

For my life, the people of Syria I charge with the spear

قبحت لو كنت أمرء صالحا

You would be ashamed if you were a virtuous man

أبا خالد ركني ومن أنا عبده

Oh Abu Khalid support me though I'm your slave

قرى ضيفه الماء القراح ابن مسمع

The son of Masma' gave his guest water from Al-Qirah

عديني بقرب وانعمي بوصال

Bring me close with nearness and gift me with union

إن في القصر ذي الخبا بدر تم

Within the palace of splendid beauty is a moon

ولما رأيت سراة قومي

When I saw the dwellings of my people

إلى بغداد أشتاق اشتياقا

To Baghdad I yearn, I yearn

صحا قلبي واقصر بعد غي

My heart awoke and shortened the distance

قل للذكي الألمعي وقد رقى

Tell the brilliant and enlightened one, who has risen

وكأس كأن المسك فيها حسوتها

A cup, as if musk's aroma in it I sensed

قل لذوي سيف وسيف ألستم

Tell those who bear swords, are you not

هددني جهلا رقاش وليتني

In ignorance, Raqash threatened me - would that

يا أوحد الدهر إني قد قصدت حمى

O Unique One of the age, I have set my sights upon an ambition

يسعى أناس لكيما يدركوك ولو

People strive so they may reach you even if

أبي لي أن ألحى نديمي إذا انتشى

أمن ضرطة بالخيزران ضرطتها

ساق سعى للطلى بالكأس يملؤها

لعمرك إني يوم أسند حاجتي

ألا رب يوم لي ببست وليلة

يهددني القعقاع في غير كنهه

إذا اعتكرت ظلماء ليل ونومت

أقول للنفس تأساء وتعزية

إذا نلت مالا قلت قيس عشيرتي

أحب على لذاذتنا شقيقا

لما خطبت إلى خليعة نفسها

ستعلم أن رأيك رأي سوء

لا تهج يشكر يا زياد ولا تكن
