من قاس جدواك بالغمام فما

يطلب الغائص في بحره الؤلؤ

ليس الشجاعة كلها خوض الردى

وإن لصرف الدهر بين جوانحي
The turns of fate between my ribs
تعانقنا لتوديع عشاء
We embraced for a farewell in the evening
قوض خيامك من أرض تضام بها
Dismantle your tents from a land that oppresses you
تالله تعذرني العلا
The hills torment me
الحر يرسب دائما في ذلة
The free man always sinks into humiliation
إذا لم يكن في بذل وجهك طائل
If there is no use in offering your face,
وإذا رأيت الفضل فاز به الفتى
When you see virtue possessed by the youth
رأيت العود مشتقا

كم كم ملح على أذاه
How much salt upon his injury
إذا صح بولك فاضرب به
If your urine is healthy, splash it
تصبر إذا الهم أسرى إليك

عابوه لما التحى فقلنا

أرى الخمر نارا والنفوس جواهرا
