- أبلغ عليا أطال الله ذلهمTell ʿAlī—may God prolong their humiliation—
- أرقت لهم ضافني بعد هجعةI lay awake with grief that came upon me after a spell of sleep,
- أظن ولا أدري وإني لقائلI think, though I do not know, and I do declare:
- أفي كل ممسى ليلة أنا قائلAt every nightfall, must I say,
- ألا من مبلغ عني خراشاListen! Who will carry a message from me to Khirash?
- إنك لو أبصرت مصرع خالدHad you seen where Khalid fell,
- أواقد لم أغررك في أمر واقدO Waqid, I did not deceive you in the matter of Waqid.
- حذاني بعد ما خذمت نعاليHe shod me after my sandals had worn through—
- حمدت إلهي بعد عروة إذ نجاI praised my God, after Urwah, for the escape of
- رفوني وقالوا يا خويلد لا ترعThey blamed me and said, "O Khawilid, do not graze!"
- عدونا عدوة لا شك فيهاWe made a dash, with no doubt about it,
- فجع أضيافي جميل بن معمرJamil ibn Ma'mar has bereaved my guests
- فقدت بني لبنى فلما فقدتهمI lost the sons of Lubna, and when I lost them,
- كأن الغلام الحنظلي أجارهAs though the Ḥanẓalī youth had been given refuge
- لحى الله جدا راضعا لو أفادنيMay God curse a miserly fortune, if it had availed me,
- لست لمرة إن لم أوف مرقبةI am not of Murrah if I do not climb a lookout,
- لعمرك والمنايا غالباتBy your life—death’s decrees prevail
- لعمري لقد راعت أميمة طلعتيBy my life, the sight of me alarmed Umayma,
- لقد علمت أم الأديبر أننيUmm al-Udaybir knows well that I
- لما رأيت بني نفاثة أقبلواWhen I saw the sons of Nufatha advancing,
- ما لدبية منذ العام لم أرهWhat has become of Dubayyah? Since last year I have not seen him
- ولا الله لا أنسى زهيراNo, by God, I shall not forget Zuhayr,
