غَداةَon the morning التَقىmet الرَجلانِthe two men فيin كَفِّthe palm of ساهِكِSahik
May God curse a miserly fortune, if it had availed me,
May Allah damn as liar the informer, if useful
On the morning the two men met in Sahik’s palm.
On the morrow when the two men met in the hand of the slayer,
فَإِنso if تَزعُميyou (feminine) claim أَنّيthat I جَبُنتُI lost courage فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
أَفِرُّI flee وَأَرميand I shoot مَرَّةًat one time كُلَّeach of ذلِكِthat
So if you claim that I lost courage, then indeed I
But if you suppose I showed cowardice, verily I
Flee and shoot—each in its turn.
Flee and cast away once for all that;
أُقاتِلُI fight حَتّىuntil لاnot أَرىI see ليagainst me مُقاتِلاًan opponent
وَأَنجوand I escape إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle خِفتُI feared بَعضَsome of المَهالِكِthe deadly perils
I fight until I see no opponent facing me,
I fight until I see no opponent for me,
And I escape whenever I fear some deadly peril.
And I escape when I fear some of the deaths.
