أَفيis it at كُلِّevery مَمسىnightfall لَيلَةٍa night أَناI قائِلٌone who says
مِنَof الدَهرِtime لاmay you not تَبعُدbe far away قَتيلَO slain one of جَميلِJamil
At every nightfall, must I say,
as time goes by, 'Be not far away, O Jamil's slain one'?
فَماfor ... not كُنتُI was أَخشىI fear أَنthat تَنالَmight reach دِماءَناour blood
قُرَيشٌQuraysh وَلَمّاand not yet يُقتَلواthey had been slain بِقَتيلِfor a slain person
For I had not feared that our blood would be shed
by Quraysh, while they had not yet been slain for one slain.
وَأَبرَحُand how grievous ماthat أُمِّرتُمُyou were given command وَمَلَكتُمُand you gained dominion
يَدَfor the span of الدَهرِtime ماas long as لَمnot تُقتَلواyou are slain بِغَليلِin burning vengeance
And how grievous that you were given command and gained dominion,
for all time, unless you are slain in burning vengeance.
