Listen! Who will carry a message from me to Khirash?
Oh, who will tell my dear Khirash
And one far away may bring you news.
News may reach you from afar

Kulayb calls him to give him his evening drink,
Calling him to come and meet
but he does not come: the boy has indeed acted foolishly.
But alas the Waleed was a fool
فَرَدَّso he returned إِناءَهُhis vessel لاno شَيءَthing فيهِin it
فَرَدَّ إِناءَهُ لا شَيءَ فيهِ
كَأَنَّas though دُموعَthe tears عَينَيهِof his two eyes الفَريدُpearls

So he returned his vessel, with nothing in it;
So he poured his cup out empty
as though the tears of his eyes were pearls.
Like tears streaming from his eyes

And morning and evening, between him and the giver of his evening drink stood
And he went without his love at dusk
black mountains of the lava fields of al-Sham.
As the black Syrian mountains loomed

For you, in seeking righteousness after me,
For in seeking righteousness after me
are like one with a stained breast who catches no prey.
You’re like perfumed wood - untrapped
