لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw بَنيthe sons of نُفاثَةَNufatha أَقبَلواthey advanced
يُشلَونَthey urge on كُلَّevery مُقَلِّصٍlong-legged steed خِنّابِlarge and tall
When I saw the sons of Nufatha advancing,
Urging on every long-legged, massive steed,
فَنَشيتُso I smelled ريحَthe scent of المَوتِdeath مِنfrom تِلقائِهِمtheir direction
وَكَرِهتُand I hated كُلَّevery مُهَنَّدٍIndian-steel sword قَضّابِkeen-cutting
So I caught the scent of death from their direction,
And hated every keen-cutting Indian sword.
وَرَفَعتُand I lifted ساقاa leg لاnot يُخافُis feared عِثارُهاits stumbling
وَطَرَحتُand I threw عَنّيoff me بِالعَراءِin the open ثِيابيmy clothes
And lifted a leg with no fear of its stumbling,
And threw off my clothes in the open.
أَقبَلتُI sped off لاnot يَشتَدُّruns شَدّيmy running واحِدٌa solitary beast

I sped off; no solitary beast could match my run—
A sturdy, lean-waisted wild ass with striped flanks.

God knows I did not leave Munabbih
Of my own free will; so ask my companions.

She blamed me; but had she witnessed it, her reproach would have been
Water wetting the lips of her vulva.
