Had you seen where Khalid fell,
beside al-Sitar, between Azlam and al-Hazm,

you would surely know a young camel is no grievous loss,
nor an old she-camel—may your hands never close upon gain!

I recalled a grief that visited me after slumber,
over Khalid; my eye streams without cease.

By my father's life, the birds lingering at midmorning
over Khalid have indeed alighted upon flesh.

Eat him—by my Lord, you will not find his like—
on the morning death overtook him at al-Radm.

No, by my father, the birds will not eat his like:
long of sword-baldric, neither feeble nor frail.
