What has become of Dubayyah? Since last year I have not seen him
Dubaiya, whom I have not seen since last year,
among the drinkers; he has neither called nor made his rounds.
Amidst the drinking and merriment, he's neither gathered nor wandered.

Were he alive, he would visit them in the morning with a brimful bowl,
Had he been alive, he'd have visited them in a pasture,
with strainers of shīzā wood from Banū al-Haṭif within it.
Where partridges abound from Sheeza of Bani Haftif.

His ashes were heaped high, his cooking-pot immense; his serving-bowl
My ash-colored friend, great in worth, his eyelids
in winter was like the watering-place’s crumbling trough.
In winter are like the basin of a dripping fountain.

Suqām has become deserted, with no companion there
He has become desolate and empty, with no companion,
except beasts of prey and the wind passing through the gharaf trees.
Save for predators, and the wind passing through the rooms.
