No, by God, I shall not forget Zuhayr,

    Though bereavements and losses multiply.

My need for him would not let me forget him,

Nor his presence when skins turned livid,

Nor his pledged protection when Jumada burst in,

And bitter cold followed its rain.

No, by God, no coat of mail can save you,

Though doubled, nor a towering frame.

Nor does a wild ass survive the ravages of time,

Who seeks pasture in every open desert waste.

Death's blows have passed him by; he is dark-hued,

Firm-fleshed, his haunch-muscle thick and full.

He went at dawn seeking pasture on the fringes of rain-watered land,

But a skillful death met him as he set out.

He went at dawn seeking pasture before a hunter,

Whom a long-striding, headstrong mare drove onward.

Tireless and powerfully built, her shank-bones firm,

When mounted in haste, she catches game.

So he bridled her, then sent her after him,

And he turned to flee, racing far ahead.

It was as if the flints between them, whenever

He struck soft ground, kicking them up, were colocynth seeds.

Then he overtook him and drove into his thigh-sinew

    A spearhead with a biting, razor-sharp edge.

Then he fell upon his brow, overtaken by

    Time's death-blows and death-dealing doom.
