- ابعث على الكذاب في برد السحرSend upon the liar in the chill of dawn
- ابعث له من الرتيلى سقماSend him sickness from the tarantula—
- ابعث له يا رب ذات أرجلSend him, O my Lord, a creature with legs,
- أتاني أخ من غيبة كان غابهاA brother came to me after a time he had spent away.
- أمحرز ما نظرت إليك إلاI cherish when I look upon you, I'm reminded
- إن الخليط نساك أجمعهIndeed, the beloved company has forgotten you, every one;
- إن بالشعب الذي دون سلعTruly, in the mountain pass below Salʿ,
- إني ومن وسج المطي لهI swear by Him for whom the riding camels hasten,
- سقى حجاجنا نوء الثرياMay the rain of the Pleiades water our pilgrims,
- فلما أصاتت عصافيرهWhen his birds were singing
- قدك مني صارم ما يفلLet this suffice you from me: a keen sword never blunted;
- لنا صاحب مولع بالخلافWe have a companion obsessed with disagreement,
- له حنجر رحب وقول منقحHe has a capacious throat and polished speech,
- له عنق مخضرة مد ظهرهIt has a green neck; all along its back
- لو قيل للعباس يا ابن محمدIf al-Abbas were told, “O son of Muhammad,
- نأت دار سلمى فشط المزارSalma's house has grown distant, and the way to visit is far.
- هلا أتيت بقمري أربيهWhy did you not bring a turtle-dove for me to rear,
- وحية مسكنه الرمالA snake whose home is the sands
- يا ربنا رب الشمال والصباO Lord of the north wind and the morning breeze
- يرون الموت دوني إن رأونيThey see death before me if they see me,
