Truly, in the mountain pass below Salʿ,
In the ravine that lies below Salʿ there is indeed
lies a slain man whose blood shall not go unavenged.
a slain man whose blood shall not go unavenged.

He left the burden upon me and departed;
He left the burden upon me and turned away;
I alone am equal to bearing that burden for him.
I can shoulder that burden on his behalf.

And in me a sister's son is intent on vengeance,
a stubborn man whose knot of resolve cannot be undone.
fierce in combat, his knot never to be undone.

The news of what befell us looms grimly upright;
Grievous news has befallen us,
it swelled until death itself seemed small within it.
so great that the greatest thing seems small beside it.

Rain from the clouds, engulfing wherever bounty avails;
A cloud's abundant downpour when he gives,
but when he strikes, he is a seasoned lion.
and when he attacks, an unyielding lion.

Among the clan he trails his robes, dark-hued and stately;
when he raids, he is a lean, swift samʿ—the wolf–hyena hybrid.
and when he raids, a lean-haunched wolf-hyena.

And young warriors marched in the noon heat, then traveled
through darkness until it rolled away, and then they encamped—
through their night, halting when it lifted.

And how often he made them kneel at a halting-ground
so grindingly confined that the unarmed man is slain there.
so harsh that a camel's footpad wears through.

after slaughter came his plunder and the driving-off of herds.

Noble birds of prey set out at dawn, full-bellied,
And the noble birds go forth at morning full-bellied,
stepping over them, too laden to take wing.
stepping over them, unable to take wing.

only through the grievous ordeal it underwent did it become lawful.
and only with hardship has it come near to being lawful.

for since my maternal uncle's death, my body is wasted.
