I swear by Him for whom the riding camels hasten,

    high-humped, their chins trembling,

casting slaver upon the wastes when

    the riders urge swift flight and hurry onward;

and by the consecrated pilgrims, whose voices ring

    in His Kaaba's forecourt when they call aloud;

and when the camels cross a stretch of trackless wilderness,

    far-flung, a ridge rises in their way;

narrow-eyed, tightly girt she-camels bring them there,

    like bows, lean and withered:

from me to him, without falsehood,

no people have ever seen or known,

among those of humankind who still remain,

or the departed forerunners who went before,

anyone like Yahya at thrusting, when

the spears lie spread and the hide-shields buckle,

on a battlefield where the armored warrior is thrown

face down, sprawling, and turns aside.

When his opponent bends forward, he follows him

with a thrust just below his loins that sinks deep.

God bless you—what a man of bounty

in war, when they resolve to act and when they stand firm!

His lance never misses the sore spot,

nor turns aside when they advance.

He has fine steeds, never neglected

    in stabling, training, or feeding.

Sleek-coated, for whom roasted meal is freely spent, and

milk from milch camels; they look drained.

Beardless youths and children—you would think them

pearls over which the shells have closed.

They remain beside him, gathering around him,

and the man shows gentleness and kindness.

Whenever he wishes, a young colt is led alongside for him,

    powerfully built, smooth-cheeked, high-headed.

It walks with a sideways strut beneath its rider,

thick-limbed, its back jolting with short steps.

    Nimble—when its groin-folds sweat,

    calm departs and violence comes.

So that fellow has readied you for his saddle and himself,

amid every morning cloud that bears a crest.

At his waist is a stiff member, preceded by

a bald head, with foreskin on its snout,

    bare, whetted with spittle when

'To combat!' is called and a pillion rider springs up.

It exceeds a forearm's measure, tightly

bound, with a hollow in its crown.

Thick, tightly wrought along its shaft, fiery,

never betrayed by weakness or thinness,

hard to the touch, bulky along the shaft,

bending away from his thigh at its root.

If Fayyad were to examine it,

he would cry out in utmost woe, lamenting.

When he strokes it, as is his habit,

and thrusting draws near, it is a deft piercer.

When it sees a tunnel, it swells and leaps,

    until its spittle almost drips.

It spares neither a youth nor a man

grown senile—and this fellow's heart is besotted.

Would that I knew: will I be saved by

    a sweating, strong-cheeked she-camel with a sideways lean,

from his snares catching hold of me,

    or hollows concealing my head?

And indeed I say, fearing his assault:

    'Enough! Keep back; beware, Khalaf!'

Even if your house stood on a mountain's heights,

with peaks below its crowning summit,

its upper reaches slippery, and its lower slopes

rugged wilderness, with remote heights between,

I would fear your stiff member might attack me by night,

if I had no way to escape it.
