Indeed, the beloved company has forgotten you, every one;
The separation has made you forget them all,
and after the parting, its spring encampment has forgotten you.
And the distance after parting has squared it.

Your heart harbored, because of their departure,
Your heart has become distressed at their separation,
a longing that the face almost revealed.
Yearning, until your face almost cracks from it.

Whenever separation summoned the beloved away,
Or whenever the beloved called an intention,
his tears flowed freely down their channels.
Their tear ducts were generous and their tears overflowed.

As though it were the countenance of one exacting a sworn oath;
So it was as if the oath of a sworn oath-taker,
so tears outstrip him, and it strikes him.
The tears precede him and knock him down.

Whenever I say, “His blind bewilderment has cleared,”
And if I say it healed his blindness,
passion returns to the heart and checks it.
Love returned to the heart to check it.

I cast both eyes toward their departing caravan;
So I threw a glance at them,
it drew near, and its young one imparted the poetry.
And it came close, so I could water the hair of my breast.

The desert had spread across its open plains
And the desert spread its garments,
a mirage, clothing it and stripping it bare.
As if to dress it and undress it.

At midmorning, above our eyes, they seemed
And they are above the eyes in the morning,
like palms whose ripening fruit fears premature plucking.
Date palms that fear the cropper because of their bounty.

A Syrian wind blew upon it;
A north wind blew against it
the mirage lowered it and lifted it.
And the branches bend it down and raise it up.

Above the ponds is a twittering as if of starlings
with the branches’ bending, its castor shrub swayed.
The leaning of the branches makes its humility sway.

Short rugged undershrubs cover
dune-like hips, whose legs sway beneath them.
Sand dunes which their twisting makes them limp.

sweet, as though wine were their fountain.
Sweet cool water, as if the wind filtered it.

from the parched one’s thirst: it slakes him.
Of the sediment of heated passions that are filtered in it.

by evening, its repeated stain bore their two colors.
That take on its colors have turned them orange.

They gave off fragrance from Qatan and its ambergris;
So they exuded cotton and ambergris,
the pungent scent of musk swept over it.
And the perfume of fine musk elevates it.

By a rain whose musk scent carries it.

abundant rain that Najd brings forth.
A rain whose abundance makes it overflow.

Its heavy rain persisted, clothing the hills,
And it insisted on covering the dunes, and its downpour
with an echo from the burdens it lifted away.
With an echo of moaning stripped them bare.

That has fulfilled over the two ears its place.

For it that vessel is mightiest,
Fat grew over it, pressing upon it.
And the wefts have germinated on it with tapping.

Where the shanks met in its purebred stoutness.

Flint splintered its hoof-pad
The brittle palm branch, its fruits
with pounding; its rumbling cry sang a melody.
Rattle to accompany the singing and tremolo.

The camel saddle had dried and its flap loosened.

It spent the day coming and going restlessly
its spring pasture blossomed, drawing the eye.
Eyes roaming misled by its squareness.

Lightning that turned its brightness toward it.

which had held it back and tended it,
That had been twisting and bending it.

The north wind destroyed its structure over it
sleep was snatched from its two eyes.
So the shelter over its eyes was stripped bare.

It grew fevered; sleeplessness painted its eye with kohl,
It had to use the sediment of the night for kohl,
while water overwhelmed it and pushed it.
And the water mounted it and pushed it away.

Dissipated the darkness of the night it could peel back.

At dawn it went forth, lean as a sword-blade:
So it went in the morning, concealing
a wild beast, hearing him though he remained unseen.
A beast at the back of the absent one it could hear.

At dawn, a flesh-and-blood man of Sinbis came after it,
And there was for it in the wilderness a piece of meat
wolf-like, small-headed and close-eared,
Like the chief’s, whose head was hairless.

at times ranging beside him and following him.
Those it sometimes resisted and pursued.

And the stouthearted one bred for war raced ahead,

Trying to avoid fate, though it was intent to meet it.

angry, it bent its neck and lowered its head.
The angry, secondary feathers subduing it.

a man turns red wherever he sees a prize.
And man is reddest where his hopes lie.

The overtaking fulfilled its destiny and time of death.

It sped on, with a breast that seemed to hold
And it went on a chest as if on it
jinn circling it and lengthening its stride.
Was a jinn wandering on it and scattering it apart.
كَالكَوكَبِlike the star الدُرِّيُّbrilliant مُسَّدِلاًstreaming downward

Like a brilliant star, streaming downward,
Like a bright star, humbled,
straight ahead, its scourge like the crackle of fire.
Lowering a barrier like the sparks of fire brandished from it.
وَاِرفَضَّand scattered عَنfrom أَظلافِهِits cloven hooves وَبِهاand around them

From its cloven hooves, and around them, scattered
And it tossed off its shoulders, and with them
chips of gravel, while its soft white stones flew.
Were flakes of pebbles flying and shooting from it.

Facing the north wind, it had
Facing the direction of north for it
a roar beating upon its two horns.
Was hobbling on its two forelegs, knocking it.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though جَهَدَتstrained أَلِيَّتُهُits oath
أَلّاthat not تَمَسَّtouch الأَرضَthe earth أَربَعُهُits four feet
As though its solemn oath were striving
And it was as if its shanks strained
that its four feet should never touch the earth.
That its four not touch the ground.
وَيلَwoe to أُمِّهِits mother حَمِشاًnimble بِصَعدَتِهِin its ascent

وَمُوائِلاًand seeking refuge إِذwhen جَدَّgrew urgent مَفزَعُهُits alarm
Woe to its mother—so nimble on the ascent,
Woe to its mother, heavily laden with its packsaddle
seeking refuge when its alarm grew urgent!
And blameworthy, when its panic intensified!
وَمُلَعَّنٍand an accursed waste يَنأىstretches far away بِسافِيَةٍamid a sand-driving wind

And an accursed waste, far away amid a sand-driving wind,
And cursed is one who steps aside with smooth rocks
unmarked by cairns, its stopping-ground hilly and confined;
On an ignoramus, the twists of which wound it!

its waterholes clogged, wandering thirstily through it
A plateau whose waters wild cats roam around
a flock of dusky sandgrouse at its alighting-place.
Whose dens are its resting places.

They scattered along the margins of its waterhole,
They scattered in the areas of its watering hole
mixed bands of water-seekers it gathered together.
A mix of lark, which gathered.
وَاللَيلُand night قَدalready أَلقىlaid down بَوانِيَهُits tent-poles
وَالصُبحُand dawn ذوwith طُرُقَينِtwo streaks مَقنَعُهُits veil
Night had laid down its tent-poles;
And the night had let down its locks
dawn’s veil bore two streaks.
And morning is veiled, though it has two paths.
فَكَشَفتُthen I cleared away عَنfrom ذيone possessing جَمَّةٍgathered water عُصُباًbands

I cleared away bands from a pool full of gathered water,
So I uncovered one wearing strips of cloth
its frog leaping upon both banks.
Dripping on its purity their loose ends.
فَثَنىthen it bent لَهُfor it الرُكبَينِboth knees ثُمَّthen حَناstooped

It bent both knees for it, then stooped;
Then it bent its two knees and leaned
its neck-vein drew taut against the neck-sinew.
Supporting itself by the rocks to deceive it.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though اِرتَجَسَتresounded مَلاغِمُهُits muzzle

As though its muzzle resounded
And it was as if its jugs had clashed
against the rocks as it gulped this water.
Against the boulder - this water he gulps and drinks.

It moved toward the breast; then shifted
So it inclined toward the jowl, so the thick hair
the braided strap, almost cutting it.
Inclined, and it almost cut it off.
فَحَمَيتُthen I protected مُقلَتَهُits eye وَقَدand already وَهَمَتit imagined

I protected its eye, which had imagined
And I stayed its swaying, as it imagined
successive draughts poured for it, then withheld.
Buckets by which to pour it and forbid it.
وَغَداand became at dawn لَهُfor it بِالبيدِin the wastes خَطرَفَةٌa quick, restless gait

I restrain it
At dawn it had a quick, restless gait in the wastes,
And it had in the wilderness some confusion
resentful and angry, while I restrained it.
Distressed, angry, destructive in its desolation.

Repeated foam coated its lips;
Covering its claws, repeated
this—its cottony fluff flying over it.
Is that which flutters over it, its flapping.

And a stout pack-camel, stubborn, made to kneel,
And some that are recalcitrant, stubborn, blessed
bewildered, howling at its drinking-place.
Perplexed, howling wherever its opening is.
