Salma's house has grown distant, and the way to visit is far.

So my two eyes taste no sleep.

Two eyes, red at their corners,

glitter in a head like a millstone.

    sharpened, crooked fangs, like knives.

when its coils clash and it curls up.

    stitched singly, with some doubled.

And a ringdove's lament has stirred my longing,

melodious at dusk, loud-voiced in the forenoon,

a mourner among the gray doves that sought at dawn

    a young palm's frond at Dhat al-Ghasa.
