الأسود النهشلي

وإني لشهم حين تُبغى شهيمتي

When my valor is sought I am bold

ماذا وقوفي على رسمٍ عفا

What is my standing on a drawing long gone

قالت له أم صمعا إذ تؤامره

His mother Samaa said, advising him,

وشطت نوى تَنهاةَ من أن توافقا

The determination waned from agreeing

فأد حقوق قومك واجتنبهُم

Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, this poem for you.

تقسم ما فيها فإن هي قسمت

You divide what is in it so if it is divided

أودى ابن جُلهم عباد بصرمته

The son of Julham's servants were undone by his severity,

فما لك عيني خارئٍ في هشيمه

Why do you gaze with tears, my eyes, at the wreckage,

غدا فتيا دهر ومر عليهم

Tomorrow a youth of time has passed over them

وقالت لا أراك تُليق شيئاً

She said, "I see you give away everything,

نام الخلي وما أحس رقادي

The fate of the clan and my restless nights

أبينت رسم الدار أم لم تُبينِ

Did she show the traces of her abode or did she not show

أسدي يا مني لحميري

My lion, lover of my donkeys,

يقلن تركن الشاء بين جلاجل

The sheep left among the rolling sands

أتاني ولم أخشَ الذي تبعثانه

He came to me, yet I did not fear what he brought with him

هل بالمنازل إن كلمتها خرسُ

Does she fall silent when visited at the abodes,

أجارتنا غُضي من السير أو قفي

Chide me for walking or stop here,

وإذا أخلائي تنكّت ودهم

When my comrades repel and abandon me,

والبيضُ قد عَنست وطال جراؤها

The eggs have gotten old and their audacity has grown long,

يوم لا ينفع الرواغ ولا

The day when flattery is of no avail,

فأدرك إبقاء العرادة ظلعها

So I realized preserving chastity keeps it intact,

إنا ذممنا على ما خيلت

We have been blamed for what seemed good

وكأن عليه من جِن قبولاً

As if possessed by madness he agreed

لهوتُ بسربال الشباب مُلاوة

I indulged in the robe of youth, sweetness,

أتاني من الأنباء أن مُجاشعاً

News came to me that Mujasha and

كذبتُ عليك لا تزال تُقوفني

I lied to you, yet you still revere me

ليبك عقالاً كل كسر مؤربٍ

Let the orator lament for every homestead laid waste

فناد أباك يُورد ما عليه

Call your father to restore what he owes,

فتىً يشتري حسن الثناء بماله

A youth who glory's praise would buy

ونالت عشاء من هبيد وبروق

She gained supper from soft cheese and lighting,

وكائن بالقَليب قَليب بدر

There is in my heart a heart as bright as the moon

إن امرأً مولاه أدنى داره

A man whose neighbor is his closest friend

صحا سكر منه طويل بزينبا

He had long been intoxicated with the wine of Zainab,

لا يعتري شُربَنا اللحاءُ وقد

Our drink is not muddied though wailing

ألا يا أسلمي قبل الفراق ظعينا

Before parting, O my people, greetings

ولقد أرجلُ لمتي بعشيةٍ

In evenings I halt my she-camel at drinking-places,

سيجرح جراح وأعقل ضيمه

Wounds will grieve, though I endure their pain

قُل لبني مُحلَّم يسيروا

Tell the sons of Muhallem to march on

فلنهشل قومي ولي في نهشل

Let us rejoice, O my people, and be joyous!

اللات كالبيض لما تعدُ أن درست

Your hands are like eggs when counted

وفاقد مولاهُ أعارت رماحُنا

When our leader was lost, our spears lent

هل لشبابٍ فات من مطلب

Is there hope for youth once passed,

ألا حي سلمى في الخليط المُفارق

Oh! The living Salma in the mixed departing,

قد أصبح الحبل من أسماء مصروما

The rope of union has become entangled

أحقاً بني أبناء سلمى بن جندلٍ

Are the sons of Salma son of Jandal truly

أقول لما أتاني هُلكُ سيدنا

I say, when death took our master

أتوني فلم أرضَ ما بيّتوا

نجوت بقُوف نفسك غير أني

جُنيت خاوية السلاح وكلمه

سما بصري لما عرفت مكانه

خالي ابُن فارس ذي الوقوف مُطلق

وإذا بللت بهم بللت بمعشرٍ

إن الأكارم من قريش كلها

يآل عُبادٍ دعوة بعد هجمةٍ

يا جار طلحة هل ترد لبونهُ

يبيت الضيفُ عند بني نُجيح

كم فاتني من كريمٍ كان ذا ثقةٍ

ألا هل لهذا الدهر من مُتعللٍ

كأنك صقبٌ من خلاف يُرى له

فإما أن تمر على شُريبٍ

أجد الشبابُ قد مضى فَتَسرَّعا

لعمرك ما أدري وإن كنتُ داريا

قد كنتُ أهدي ولا أهدى فعلمني

وغودر علود لها متطاول

تلقاهُ الملوكُ فأوجهوه

ولدت بِحادي النجم يحرق ما رأى

ألا من لامني إلا صديق

وأمهم ضبع باتت تجر سلىً

نفع قليلٌ إذا نادى الصدى أُصلا

لا أبتغي عنهم ولا أُشريهم

لها وركا عنزٍ وساقا نعامةٍ

قد قلتُ لما بَدتِ العقابُ

أتاني عن أبي أنسٍ وعيد

أبني نُجيح إن أمكم
