- أبيت لنفسي الخسف لما رضوا بهI refused humiliation for myself when they were content with it.
- إذا الهشم الفه اشترى ببناتهIf the feeble dullard made purchases with his daughters,
- ألا أبلغ سراقة يا ابن مالListen—tell Suraqa, O son of Mal:
- ألا آذنتنا من تدللها ملسLo, Mals has given us notice, out of her coyness.
- إلى روض به نفل وبقلToward a meadow with clover and greens,
- إما تريني اليوم من لحمي الضبعIf today you see me, with the hyena after my flesh,
- أيوعدني أبو ليلى طفيلDoes Abu Layla, Tufayl, threaten me,
- تركت ابن الحريز على ذمامI left Ibn al-Hurayz at Dhimam,
- تمنى حميد أن يلاقي قرحتيḤumayd wished to meet my Qarḥa,
- جزى الله ابن عروة حين أمسىMay God requite Ibn ʿUrwa when he became
- حملت عليه الوَرد حتى تركتهI charged al-Ward against him until I left him
- دعوت أبا ليلى إلى السلم كي يرىI called Abu Layla to peace, so that he might see
- رأتني صريع الخمر يوماً فسؤتهاOne day she saw me laid low by wine, and I distressed her.
- فلكم هريرة ماتجف دموعهاAnd how often Hurayra’s tears fail to dry!
- كالرأس مرتفع فيه مشاعرهLike a head, raised high, with its senses within it;
- لسان الفتى نصف ونصف فؤادهA young man's tongue is half of him, and his heart the other half;
- لعمرك ما ليث وإن كنت منهمBy your life, Layth—though I am one of them—
- معي كل مسترخي الإزار كأنهWith me is every man whose waistcloth hangs loose, as though he,
- مهلا دريد عن التسرع إننيEasy, Durayd—refrain from rashness; I
- وإني لأقري الهم حين يضيفنيIndeed, I play host to care whenever it visits me,
- وفارس في غمار الموت منغمسAnd many a horseman, immersed in the depths of death,
- وكنتم مثل شاة السوء ظلتAnd you were like a wretched ewe that kept
- ومغير حجر قد جررت برجلهAnd Hujr’s Mughīr I have dragged by its leg,
- يبكى علينا ولا نبكي على أحدWe are wept over, but we weep over no one.
