وإنيand indeed I لأقريI surely entertain as a guest الهمَّworry حينwhen يضيفنيit visits me as a guest
وإني لأقري الهمَّ حين يضيفني
زماعاًfirm resolve إذاwhen ماemphatic particle الهمُّworry أعيَتprove intractable مصادرُهits ways of escape
زماعاً إذا ما الهمُّ أعيَت مصادرُه
Indeed, I play host to care whenever it visits me,
And indeed I entertain worry, when it comes to me as a guest,
with unflinching resolve, when care can find no way out.
with firm resolve, when worry's ways of escape prove elusive.
وأبغيand I seek صوابsoundness of الظّنّjudgment أعلمI know أنّهthat it
وأبغي صواب الظّنّ أعلم أنّه
إذاwhen طاشgoes astray ظنُّthe judgment of المرءa man طاشتgo astray مقادرهhis fortunes
إذا طاش ظنُّ المرء طاشت مقادره
I seek soundness of judgment, knowing that
And I seek sound judgment, knowing that
when a man’s judgment misses its mark, his reckonings go awry.
when a man's judgment goes astray, his fortunes go astray.
وقدand sometimes يكرهdislikes الإنسانa person ماهوwhat is رشدهhis right guidance
وقد يكره الإنسان ماهو رشده
وتُلقىand is cast علىupon غيرother than الصوابwhat is right شَرشِرُهhis whole being
وتُلقى على غير الصواب شَرشِرُه
A person may hate the very thing in which his right guidance lies,
And a man may dislike what would guide him rightly,
while his evil impulses are drawn toward what is not right.
and his whole being is thrown into what is wrong.
وكمand how many كانthere was فيin آفلwaning/setting (unclear here; perhaps 'household') المُلَوِّحal-Mulawwiḥ منof فتىa young man
وكم كان في آفل المُلَوِّح من فتى
منادَىcalled upon مفدًّىhonored with offers of ransom حينwhen تبلىare put to the test سرائرهhis innermost qualities
منادَى مفدًّى حين تبلى سرائره
How many a young man there was in the house of al-Mulawwiḥ,
And how many a young man there was in al-Mulawwiḥ's household [conjectural reading],
hailed—“May I be your ransom!”—when his inmost character was tried;
Called upon, with others pledging themselves as his ransom, when his inner mettle was tested.
وكمand how many كانthere was فيin آلthe family of الملوّحal-Mulawwiḥ منof فتىa young man
وكم كان في آل الملوّح من فتى
يجيبanswers خطيباas an orator لاnot تُخافare feared عوائرهhis verbal slips
يجيب خطيبا لا تُخاف عوائره
and how many a young man there was in the house of al-Mulawwiḥ
And how many a young man there was in the family of al-Mulawwiḥ,
who answers as an orator, with no harmful lapse to fear.
Who answers as an orator whose slips of speech are not feared.
