تركتُ ابنَ الحريز على ذمام

وصحبته تلوذ به العوافي

وصحبته تلوذ به العوافي

I left Ibn al-Hurayz at Dhimam,

I left Ibn al-Hazir in charge of the reins

And scavengers kept him company, flocking around him.

While his companions sought refuge in him as a sanctuary.

ولم يصرف صدور الخيل إلا

ولم يصرف صدور الخيل إلا

صوائِحُ من أيائيم ضعافِ

صوائِحُ من أيائيم ضعافِ

And nothing turned the horses’ breasts aside except

Yet he did not turn the chests of the horses

Wailing women among the feeble widows.

Save for the cries of the wretched and weak.

وقِرنٍ قد تركت الطير منه

وقِرنٍ قد تركت الطير منه

كمعتنز العواركِ من منافِ

كمعتنز العواركِ من منافِ

And many a rival I left with birds keeping away from him,

With a bow whose tips even birds had abandoned

As menstruating women keep away from Manaf.

Like the refuge of nomads from high ground.
