أيوعدني أبو ليلى طًفَيلٌ

أيوعدني أبو ليلى طًفَيلٌ

ويُهدي لي مع القلص الكلاما

ويُهدي لي مع القلص الكلاما

Does Abu Layla, Tufayl, threaten me,

Does Abu Layla promise me a visit,

and send me words along with the young she-camels?

And with boughs gift me words?

أتوعدني وأنت ببطن نجد

أتوعدني وأنت ببطن نجد

فلا نجدا أخاف ولا تِهاما

فلا نجدا أخاف ولا تِهاما

Do you threaten me while you are in the heart of Najd?

Do you make me promises when in Nejd’s belly you dwell,

For I fear neither Najd nor Tihamah.

So neither do I fear Nejd nor blame?

وطئنا نجدكم حتى تركنا

وطئنا نجدكم حتى تركنا

حزون النجد نحسبها سخاما

حزون النجد نحسبها سخاما

We trampled your Najd until we left

We threaded your Nejd until we left her

Najd’s rugged ground seeming to us as soft as down.

Grieving for Nejd, thinking her rude.
