If the feeble dullard made purchases with his daughters,
If the profligate spendthrift sold his daughters
by your fortune, I did not patch my poverty with them.
Your diligence did not patch up my defects
جعلتI placed بناتيmy daughters فيamong مواليَّmy kinsmen قَصرةًexclusively reserved
وماand not راعنيdazzled me ذوone possessing شورةfine appearance وجمالand beauty
I reserved my daughters exclusively for my kinsmen.
I made my daughters slaves in their mansions
No man of fine appearance and beauty dazzled me.
And I was not concerned with splendor and beauty

ولاnor ذرعthe arm-span نوبيof a Nubian أشقlong-limbed طوالvery tall
Nor did a gift or Sahaba's two cloaks dazzle me,
And I was not concerned with an empty and cold cloud
nor the arm-span of a lanky, towering Nubian.
Or the long reach of an outstretched rope
رأيتI found الأُلىthose who يأتونcome in answer to للحقfor what is right دعوتيmy summons
مواليَّmy kinsmen والأُقصَينَand those farthest away غيرُnot مواليallies
I found that those who answer my summons for what is right
I saw the near ones respond to my call
are my kinsmen, while those far removed are no allies.
My masters, not the strangers who were not loyal
ولستand I am not ببانa builder لامرىءfor a man سَمكَthe height; roof بيتهof his house

Nor am I one to raise a man's roof
And I do not reveal to anyone the pillar of his house
and leave my own house empty at Khamal.
And I leave my house empty out of pride
