- بمثلها تقطع الموماة عن عرضWith it the bond is severed from the loved one
- تراءت وأستار من البيت دونهاShe showed herself, though the house’s curtains screened her,
- دافعت عنه بشعريI defended him with my poetry, when
- ذهبت من الهجران في غير مذهبYou have pursued estrangement along an unfitting path;
- سماوته أسمال برد محبرIts upper body is tatters of a richly patterned cloak,
- طحا بك قلب في الحسان طروبA heart enraptured by beautiful women has carried you away,
- فارس ما غادروه ملحماWhat a horseman they left beset in battle!
- قديديمة التجريب والحلمA little before experience and sound judgment, I
- كأن ابنة الزيدي يوم لقيتهاAs if the Zaydi's daughter, when I met her
- لحى الله دهرا ذعذع المال كلهMay God curse an age that scattered all the wealth,
- للماء والنار في قلبي وفي كبديFor water and fire, in my heart and in my liver,
- من رجل أحبوه وناقتيWhat man shall I reward with her—and with my she-camel—
- هل ما علمت وما استودعت مكتومIs what you know, and what was entrusted to you, kept secret?
- وأخي محافظة طليق وجههAnd many a keeper of honor, open-faced,
- ود نفير للمكاور أنهمNufayr wished that the Makawir were
- ودوية لا يهتدى لفلاتهاAnd a vast desert, through whose wilderness no way can be found
- وشامت بي لا تخفى عداوتهAnd many a man will gloat over me, his enmity plain,
- وفي الحي بيضاء العوارض ثوبهاAnd in the tribe is a woman with white teeth; her garment,
- وفي الشمال من الشريان مطعمةAnd in the left hand is a reinforced bow of sharyān wood,
- وفي الشمال من الشريان مطعمةAnd in his left hand is an inlaid bow of sharyān wood,
- ومولى كمولى الزبرقان دملتهWith a master like Zibriqan's master I bandaged him
- ونحن جلبنا من ضرية خيلناWe brought our horses from Ḍariyya,
- وهل أسوى براقش حين أسوىAnd did Baraqish fall into ruin, when it fell into ruin,
- ويلم لذات الشباب معيشةAh, the delights of youth—what a life,
