We brought our horses from Ḍariyya,
We brought our horses from Darriya
driving them in bands over the hillcrests.
We pushed them hard, to their utmost

Swift, sweat slips off their haunches;
Swiftly trotting, water drips off their browbands
we drive them across a broad, far-stretching waste and low ground.
We pushed them through mud and marsh

Dried sweat is scraped from their haunches,
Parched dry, water drips off their browbands
and they complain of the marks left by lashing whips.
Their whips left stripes on their flanks

So they were overtaken short of al-Huyaymāʾ, with the pace now slackening,
He caught them before Hiyayma exhausted
after a far-stretching run that taxed strength to the utmost.
Though he had striven with great effort
أَصَبنَthey struck الطَريفَal-Ṭarīf وَالطَريفَand al-Ṭarīf بنَson of مالِكٍMālik

They struck al-Ṭarīf and al-Ṭarīf son of Mālik;
He got the best of Tarif and Tarif ibn Malik
and it would have been a cure had they struck al-Malāqiṭ.
It would have been a cure, had he caught the strays

Then they would have known what they had laid up for themselves
Then they would know what they have brought upon themselves
of evil—indeed, evil lays clans low.
Evil, for evil ever has kin
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see يَوماًa day كانَwas أَكثَرَmore باكِياًa weeper
وَأَكثَرَand more مَغبوطاًenvied for good fortune يُجَلُّheld in honor وَغابِطاًand one envying
Never have I seen a day with more weepers,
Never did I see a day where more wept
and more men envied and revered, and more men envying.
Or more were blest, exalted and humbled
