Is what you know, and what was entrusted to you, kept secret?

Or is her bond, now she has gone far from you, severed today?

Or is an old man who weeps, his tears not yet exhausted,

after his loved ones on parting day, to be rewarded?

all the camels were haltered just before dawn.

all of them were packed and bound with Tazidi cloths,

as though stained with blood from the entrails.

They carry a citron, lavishly sprinkled with perfume,

as though her sweet scent were being inhaled.

As though a musk-pod lay in the partings of her hair,

even for one reaching to take it, though his nose is blocked.

a dark she-camel, her withers pierced by the pack-saddle.

a compact hump like the rim of a smith's bellows.

foam smeared across her cheek and both jaws.

The mange has left her, while she is covered

with a greasy coating of clean, undiluted tar.

She waters channels whose straw has been cleared,

their lower reaches brimful with incoming water.

All from remembering Salma; yet my remembering her now

is only folly, and guessing the unseen is blind stone-casting.

she is like a gazelle fawn kept within the tent.

Will she bring me up with the foremost of the people, when they have gone far—

    a tough, massive she-camel, like a wild she-ass at a shallow pool?

    as a lean-flanked, dark-marked beast listens warily.

As though she were a red-legged male ostrich, his legs bare,

for whom bitter colocynth and tannum have ripened at al-Liwa.

as though wary of goading and startled.

as though, when they crouch, they were an earthen mound.

he seems a toad at the meadow's far edge.

a collapsed tent around which a clumsy woman has busied herself.
