كأن النعام باض فوق رؤوسهم

أبى القلب أن يأتي السدير وأهله

ألا إن خير الناس كلهم فهد

Indeed, the best of all people is Fahd

رأيتك ذا شر وفي الشر منقعا

وإنا كالحصى عددا وإنا

And we are as numerous as pebbles, and we

هاج المنازل رحلة المشتاق

The dwellings yearned for the journey of the longing one

أودى الشباب حميدا ذو التعاجيب

Youth has passed, O commendable one with wonders,

نحن رددنا ليربوع مواليها

We oft repeated to a lovely gazelle

فاقني لعلك أن تحظي وتحتلبي

Surpass me, that you may gain good fortune and milk

مستحقبات رواياها جحافلها

Roaming multitudes narrate their fables

سائل بنا يوم ورد الكلاب

Ask us one day when words overlap

لو كنت أبكي للحمول لشاقني

If I wept for the caravans, the ascent

ومن كان لا تعتد أيامه له

And he whose days are not numbered

ما الخلى والمسح إن كان منة

Neither friendship nor wiping, if it's a favor upon me

تقول ابنتي إن انطلاقك واحدا

My daughter says: Your solitary departure

لمن طلل مثل الكتاب المنمق

For one with a ruin like an ornamented book

هو المدخل النعمان في أرض فارس

He is the one who entered the land of Persia

سأجزيك بالقد الذي قد فككته

I will reward you for the excellence you have unraveled

لنا خباء ، وراووق ، ومسمعة

We have chambers, and porches, and earshot

قد أوعدتنا معد ، وهي كاذبة

The distributor promised us victory, but she is a liar

فسائل بسعدي في خندف

With Sa'd's mounted riders at Khindif

يا دار أسماء ، بالعلياء من إضم

O home of Asma, in the heights of Edam

بكل مجنب كالسيد نهد

وزيد الخيل قد لاقى صفادا

يا حر أمسى سواد الرأس خالطه

حتى استغثن بأهل الملح ضاحية
